Abstract

This volume brings together 474 letters that Luciano Anceschi and Oreste Macrí wrote each other for 50 years. The strong point of the deep (and maybe unexpected) friendship between the two critics – based on the shared and fierce activism, on the common outlook of an «uncompromising humanism» – is curiously a dialectical progression that almost always excludes the perspective of a total agreement. It is a dialogue that springs from differences, and that exhorts to think about them. After the Second World War, the protagonists of the correspondence started to relaxedly discuss about the present and future of the European cultural civilization, the meaning of a literature that seems to illustrate a permanent state of crisis, and the events that gave life to the literary debate until the threshold of the new millennium, between post-hermetic tendencies and new experimentalisms.

Abstract

There are some strange stories heard in Viennese jazz scene. Already in the second half of the 1950s, two art students, who were in touch with painters like Arnulf Rainer, Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Ernst Fuchs, experimented with free improvisation – years before this music had a name even in the country of its origin, in the USA. Already in 1961, they did their first official concert – which might be not only the first Austrian free jazz concert, but one of the first performances of this music in whole Europe. While running an own gallery between 1959 and 1965 and hosting the whole Viennese art scene, they continued to develop their music. It wasn’t until 1966 that they had their first Viennese concert as “Masters of Unorthodox Jazz” (MoUJ), and, finally, the year 1969 brought a (modest) breaktrough with a scandalized appearance at the Austrian jazz festival at Vienna Konzerthaus and the release of their first record “Overground” – with cover art by Arnulf Rainer. The art scene remained the main audience until the end of the MoUJ in 1975: There were concerts at the Viennese “Museum of 20th century”, there was a second record with a provocative cover by Franz Ringel. Composers like Kurt Schwertsik and Otto M. Zykan showed interest in this unique free improvised music, Austria’s most famous photographer Franz Hubmann took photos, avantgarde filmmaker Kurt Kren used parts of his MoUJ concert-films for his experimental works. Another group, the “Reform Art Unit” (RAU) led by multi-instrumentalist Fritz Novotny until today, took over the torch. They came out of another non-music scene: the so-called “Freundeskreis” (circle of friends) around writer Rolf Schwendter. Partly in touch with the MoUJ, the RAU developed a completely different style of free improvisation, on the one hand inspired by contemporary Austrian composers (Giselher Smekal, Günther Rabl, Mia Zabelka), on the other hand by oriental music: The debut “Darjeeling” (1970) was recorded with Indian sitar player Ram Chandra Mistry. In later years they became aware of their personal connections to twelve-tone composer Josef Matthias Hauer, filling the term of “Viennese school of improvised music” with sonic contents. This work tries to point out the historic chronology of these two groundbreaking but internationally little known groups a) within the context of Austrian jazz history and b) within the context of European free jazz, which is called the movement of double liberation, due to the fact that many improvisers of the Old World for the first time stopped imitating American musicians and became aware of their own cultural roots. So this book reveals an unusual perspective on Austrian cultural history after 1945.

Abstract

Complementary Modernisms in China and the United States: Art as Life/Art as Idea is the result of a conference where Chinese and Americanist art historians addressed the development of modernism in their respective cultural traditions. The chapters juxtapose historical developments without attempting to map connections or influences. Instead, both national modernisms are presented as part of the larger terrain of global modernism, but generated within specific, localized circumstances. This juxtaposition reveals significant differences as much as any particular moments of connection or similarities, disrupting any standard narrative of the primacy of French (or European) avant-garde art and its influence on more belated and peripheral communities. The differences that are revealed are not merely the result of the very different historical trajectories of each country’s moves into modernity. Rather, differences in attention and methodology are just as important, in particular the focus on the post-1980 development of Chinese art as part of the modernization of Chinese culture and economy, rather than the American perspective on post-1980s postmodern qualities. At the same time, significant convergent concerns emerge, such as the importance of urban centers and urbanization, the profound effect of political and technological disruption, and the question of identity. The volume represent a cross-section of Chinese and Americanist art historians, both early career and senior scholars, working on a wide variety of subjects, such as the Ashcan School, Impressionism, Cai Liang, Liang Sicheng, Huang Binhong, Cézanne, Bauhaus, Joseph Cornell, Andrew Wyeth, Louise Nevelson, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and contemporary art more broadly, with (as is usual in any survey of the 20th century these days) a concentration on the 1960s.《交互视野下的中国和美国的现代艺术: 艺术/生活或观念》这一会议论文集收录了中美艺术史家对现代主义在各自传统下的发展进行研究所得的成果。

Abstract

In this work an attempt is made to describe formism in terms of Tytuz Czyżewski's poetry as an independent poetic approach. The starting point is the aesthetic writings on the visual art of Chwistek and Witkacy. On the basis of central ideas developed in them, the formistic can be made more recognizable and serve as a basis for the interpretation of Czyżewski's poems. Thus, their analysis deals with problems of a form-oriented art, the relationship between form and content in the literary work of art, and the relationship between art and extra-artistic reality, with which the formists' intention is to dissolve art or literature from their mimetic function and to emphasize the individual processing of the outer world by the artist. Such understood poetic formism stands for a thoroughly original literary approach, which apart from Expressionism and Futurism can be regarded as characteristic of the early Polish avant-garde. A comparison of formism with parallel currents of the Hungarian and Czech avant-garde completes this work.

Abstract

This study is devoted to the authors who initiated the revival of the Russian avantgarde tradition, which had been brutally suppressed by the Soviet authorities in the mid- 1930s. The revival of this tradition took place in the literary underground, where writers who endeavored to fulfil this challenging task largely remained until the collapse of the Soviet regime. Most of them emerged from obscurity only at the beginning of the 1990s, which explains why their dramatic and fascinating history has been so little examined by scholars. Although the situation has changed significantly in the last decade, during which some insightful studies have appeared in both Russia and the West, the subject obviously requires more thorough and systematic exploration. This book aims to narrow important gaps in the scholarship on the Russian literary avantgarde during its least investigated period.

Abstract
