Abstract

Over the last decade, various nanomaterials (NMs) have attracted tremendous attention with the incredible development in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Some NMs are explored increasingly for biomedical applications, including drug delivery carriers, imaging probes, antimicrobial agents, biosensors, and tissue engineering scaffolds. However, the in vitro and in vivo toxicities of NMs related to oxidative stress are the main obstacles to use them in biomedical fields. One of the most promising strategies to address these obstacles is functionalizing NMs with biocompatible molecules or materials. In this Special Issue, we are especially interested in manuscripts that advance the understanding of the interaction of NMs with cells, such as cellular responses to NMs, intracellular behaviors of NMs, therapeutic and imaging potentials of NMs, as well as the functionalization of NMs through coating, patterning and hybridization with other biomolecules for multifaceted biomedical applications.

Abstract

Please describe the book in straightforward and consumer-friendly terms.[Although the technological and scientific importance of functional polymers have been well established over the last few decades, the most recent focus that has attracted much attention concerns stimuli-responsive polymer gels. These materials are of particular interest due to their abilities to respond to internal and/or external chemo-physical stimuli. Aside from the scientific challenges of designing stimuli-responsive polymer gels, the main technological interests concern numerous applications, ranging from catalysis in microsystem technology and chemo-mechanical actuators to sensors. This Special Issue includes seventeen papers covering a wide range of subjects including thermo- and pH-responsive hydrogels, functionalized materials, supramolecular stimuli-responsive structures, composite hydrogels, sensors, and biomedical applications. Together, these contributions not only provide an excellent overview of the current state-of-the-art in the field but also point out exciting challenges and opportunities for future work. In a number of reviews the most recent findings on “Stimuli-Responsive Gels” are compiled in this book supplemented by original contributions.

Abstract

Stimuli-responsive polymer systems can be defined as functional materials that show physical or chemical property changes in response to external stimuli such as temperature, radiation, chemical agents, pH, mechanical stress, and electric and magnetic fields. Recent developments in manufacturing techniques have facilitated the production of a wide range of stimuli-responsive polymer systems, such as micro- and nanoscale structures, with potential applications in soft sensors and actuators, smart textiles, soft robots, and artificial muscles. This book brings together the recent progress in manufacturing techniques, with particular emphasis on 3D and 4D printing and applications of stimuli-responsive polymer systems in biomedicine and soft robotics.

Abstract

Sol–gel technology is a contemporary advancement in science that requires taking a multidisciplinary approach with regard to its various applications. This book highlights some applications of the sol–gel technology, including protective coatings, catalysts, piezoelectric devices, wave guides, lenses, high-strength ceramics, superconductors, synthesis of nanoparticles, and insulating materials. In particular, for biotechnological applications, biomolecules or the incorporation of bioactive substances into the sol–gel matrix has been extensively studied and has been a challenge for many researchers. Some sol–gel materials are widely applied in light-emitting diodes, solar cells, sensing, catalysis, integration in photovoltaic devices, and more recently in biosensing, bioimaging, or medical diagnosis; others can be considered excellent drug delivery systems. The goal of an ideal drug delivery system is the prompt delivery of a therapeutic amount of the drug to the proper site in the body, where the desired drug concentration can be maintained. The interactions between drugs and the sol–gel system can affect the release rate. In conclusion, the sol–gel synthesis method offers mixing at the molecular level and is able to improve the chemical homogeneity of the resulting composite. This opens new doors not only regarding
