Abstract

Daniel Albero Santacreu presents a wide overview of certain aspects of the pottery analysis and summarizes most of the methodological and theoretical information currently applied in archaeology in order to develop wide and deep analysis of ceramic pastes. The book provides an adequate framework for understanding the way pottery production is organised and clarifies the meaning and role of the pottery in archaeological and traditional societies.The goal of this book is to encourage reflection, especially by those researchers who face the analysis of ceramics for the first time, by providing a background for the generation of their own research and to formulate their own questions depending on their concerns and interests. The three-part structure of the book allows readers to move easily from the analysis of the reality and ceramic material culture to the world of the ideas and theories and to develop a dialogue between data and their interpretation.Daniel Albero Santacreu is a Lecturer Assistant in the University of the Balearic Islands, member of the Research Group Arqueo UIB and the Ceramic Petrology Group. He has carried out the analysis of ceramics from several prehistoric societies placed in the Western Mediterranean, as well as the study of handmade pottery from contemporary ethnic groups in Northeast Ghana.

Abstract

Les nécropoles de l’ancienne Kition (sous la ville moderne de Larnaca) ont fait l’objet de nombreuses fouilles depuis le xixe siècle : aux recherches d’antiquités ont succédé des fouilles d’urgence, sans qu’aucune exploration toutefois n’ait pu se faire de façon programmée, avec les méthodes de l’analyse stratigraphique et anthropologique. Entre 2012 et 2014, la mission archéologique de Kition a conduit des fouilles systématiques dans une des nécropoles de l’âge du Fer de la ville, au lieu-dit Pervolia. Programmée dans le cadre d’une étude générale de la topographie urbaine à l’âge du Fer, cette fouille a permis de conduire une étude exhaustive, à la fois à l’échelle du site (occupation diachronique de l’espace) et à celle de la tombe (architecture, cycle d’utilisation, pratiques funéraires). Les résultats de ces travaux occupent la majeure partie de ce volume, que complètent la publication du matériel de tombes découvertes lors de fouilles plus anciennes sur le même site et celle des fouilles d’urgence réalisées par le Département des Antiquités de Chypre en 2012 dans une autre nécropole de la ville, au lieu-dit Tourapi. Le volume est dirigé par Anna Cannavò, Sabine Fourrier et Alexandre Rabot, en collaboration avec Anna Satraki pour la publication des fouilles de Kition-Tourapi. Plusieurs spécialistes ont bien voulu apporter leur concours : Fabien Belhaoues, Rémi Corbineau, Nathalie Delhopital, Nathalia Denninger, Lluis Garcia Petit, Armelle Gardeisen, Anna Georgiadou, Evangéline Markou, Maria A. Socratous et Prisca Vareilles. Les archives scientifiques de la fouille de la mission à Kition-Pervolia sont consultables en libre accès sur le portail chypre.mom.fr, développé par Bruno Morandière (MOM).

Abstract

The Spanish colonization dramatically interrupted the autonomous development of ancient Mesoamerican culture. Nevertheless, indigenous societies learnt to live with the conquest. It was not only a time of crisis, but also an extraordinarily creative time period in which material culture reflected indigenous peoples’ varied responses and adaptations to the changing circumstances. This work presents insights into the process of cultural continuity and change in the indigenous world by focusing on pottery technology in the Nahua (Aztec) region of Central Mexico. The late pre-colonial, early colonial and present-day characteristics of this industry are explored in order to come to a renewed understanding of its long-term development.

The particular interest of this small collection with some outstanding pieces is the close connection to Alexander Conze, professor of archaeology at Vienna, pioneering the study of the Geometrie style in the early 1870s.

Akh Purattim ou « les rives de l'Eupkrate » est une des expressions utilisées au xviiie siècle av. J.-C. pour désigner le royaume de Mari, qui s’étendait de la confluence du Khabour au verrou de Bagbouz, actuellement à la frontière syro-irakienne. La série ainsi dénommée, précisée par son sous-titre Mémoires d’archéologie et d’histoire régionales interdisciplinaires, est destinée à devenir le point de rencontre des recherches historiques, archéologiques, épigraphiques ou archéométriques sur la région, en faisant en priorité appel aux travaux engagés par les diverses missions, françaises (Mari, Terqa...) et étrangères, en particulier pour la publication de leurs rapports préliminaires. Mais le titre peut également être pris dans une acception géographique beaucoup plus vaste et héberger des études qui s’intéressent le plus largement possible au rôle de cette confluence dans le jeu syro-mésopotamien tout au long de l’Antiquité.

Abstract

The E-book "Nucleation and Crystallization of Glasses and Glass-Ceramics" highlights historic perspectives and current research in the field of glass-ceramic technology. Glass-ceramic technology is promising to provide us with materials of high strength, high toughness, unique electrical/electronic or magnetic properties, exceptional optical or unusual thermal or chemical properties. The greater diversity of microstructure-property arrangements and processing routes over glasses and ceramics are responsible that glass-ceramics are the preferred choice of materials in many technical, consumer, optical, medical/dental, electrical/electronic, and architectural fields. This includes increasing uses of glass-ceramic materials for environment and energy applications in the last decades. The positive development of glass-ceramic technology has become true in particular due to the pioneering spirit, resourcefulness, and courage of researchers of the first generation. Extraordinary and, therefore, to be distinguished is the work of the glass-ceramic inventor S. Donald Stookey to whom this Research Topic is dedicated. The authors, all experts in the field of glass-ceramics and based in industry, academia and governmental institutions, contributed to this E-book under the guidance of the Technical Committee 07 "Crystallization and Glass-Ceramics" of the International Commission on Glass (ICG).

Abstract

Advanced Glasses, Composites and Ceramics for High-Growth Industries (CoACH) was a European Training Network (ETN) project (http://www.coach-etn.eu/) funded by the Horizon 2020 program. CoACH involved multiple actors in the innovation ecosystem for advanced materials, composed of five universities and ten enterprises in seven different European countries. The project studied the next generation of materials that could bring innovation in the healthcare, construction, and energy sectors, among others, from new bioactive glasses for bone implants to eco-friendly cements and new environmentally friendly thermoelectrics for energy conversion. The novel materials developed in the CoACH project pave the way for innovative products, improved cost competitiveness, and positive environmental impact. The present Special Issue contains 14 papers resulting from the CoACH project, showcasing the breadth of materials and processes developed during the project.

Abstract

The development of solid state gas sensors based on microtransducers and nanostructured sensing materials is the key point in the design of portable measurement systems able to reach sensing and identification performance comparable with analytical ones. In such a context several efforts must be spent of course in the development of the sensing material, but also in the choice of the transducer mechanism and its structure, in the electrical characterization of the performance and in the design of suitable measurement setups. This call for papers invites researchers worldwide to report about their novel results on the most recent advances and overview in design and measurements for applications in gas sensors, along with their relevant features and technological aspects. Original research papers are welcome (but not limited) on all aspects that focus on the most recent advances in: (i) basic principles and modeling of gas and VOCs sensors; (ii) new gas sensor principles and technologies; (iii) Characterization and measurements methodologies; (iv) transduction and sampling systems; (vi) package optimization; (vi) gas sensor based systems and applications.

Abstract

The use of lightweight structures across several industries has become inevitable in today’s world given the ever-rising demand for improved fuel economy and resource efficiency. In the automotive industry, composites, reinforced plastics, and lightweight materials, such as aluminum and magnesium are being adopted by many OEMs at increasing rates to reduce vehicle mass and develop efficient new lightweight designs. Automotive weight reduction with high-strength steel is also witnessing major ongoing efforts to design novel damage-controlled forming processes for a new generation of efficient, lightweight steel components. Although great progress has been made over the past decades in understanding the thermomechanical behavior of these materials, their extensive use as lightweight solutions is still limited due to numerous challenges that play a key role in cost competitiveness. Hence, significant research efforts are still required to fully understand the anisotropic material behavior, failure mechanisms, and, most importantly, the interplay between industrial processing, microstructure development, and the resulting properties. This Special Issue reprint book features concise reports on the current status in the field. The topics discussed herein include areas of manufacturing and processing technologies of materials for lightweight applications, innovative microstructure and process design concepts, and advanced characterization techniques combined with modeling of material’s behavior.

Abstract

This specialist edition features key innovations in the science and engineering of new grinding processes, abrasives, tools, machines, and systems for a range of important industrial applications. Topics written by invited, internationally recognized authors review the advances and present results of research over a range of well-known grinding processes. A significant introductory review chapter explores innovations to achieve high productivity and very high precision in grinding. The reviewed applications range from grinding systems for very large lenses and reflectors, through to medium size grinding machine processes, and down to grinding very small components used in MEMS . Early research chapters explore the influence of grinding wheel topography on surface integrity and wheel wear. A novel chapter on abrasive processes also addresses the finishing of parts produced by additive manufacturing through mass finishing. Materials to be ground range from conventional engineering steels to aerospace materials, ceramics, and composites. The research findings highlight important new results for avoiding material sub-surface damage.
