Abstract

The key importance of radar remote sensing for civil applications has been recognized for decades, and enormous scientific and technical developments have been carried out to further improve SAR sensors and SAR data processing. In recent years, SAR satellite constellations, consisting of two or more satellites, are becoming the “new normal” in SAR remote sensing. The present availability of SAR sensor constellations, such as Cosmo SkyMed, TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X, and the new Copernicus sensors Sentinel-1A and 1B, supply a continuous stream of imagery with a unique short revisit cycle of only six days. Together with many more operational and planned SAR satellite systems, such as Geo-Fen 3 or NASA ISRO SAR (NISAR), this unprecedented amount of high-quality SAR data is suitable for a variety of applications, provided proper data processing methodology are applied. In "Advances in SAR: Sensors, Methodologies, and Applications" advancements in the field of hardware, software, and applications are presented, covering a wide range of topics.

Abstract

The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) is a documentary language used for information representation and retrieval in most libraries in the Western world, particularly in Portugal. This classification language has two purposes: (i) to represent and categorize the subjects of the documents that integrate the collections and, in some cases, (ii) to physically arrange those documents. This work aims to be a guide for the application and use of the UDC and to help understanding its theoretical foundations. The theoretical and practical dimension of this work and its didactic discourse make it an important text for both Information Science students and professionals. This work is structured in three parts: Part I: About the UDC principles; Part II: Structure of UDC; And Part III: UDC Main Classes. Part I, purely theoretical, defines the CDU as a documentary language, addresses its origin, contextualizes it, and refers to its main functions. In a theoretical dimension, this first part refers to the general foundations and characteristics that distinguish this documentary language from other controlled vocabularies. In Part II, the structure of the CDU is analyzed in a more theoretical-practical perspective: (i) the index and its function; (Ii) the notation and its characteristics; (Iii) Auxiliary Tables, their typology, function and characteristics, as well as the signs that identify them; And (iv) the Main Tables, their characteristics and functions. In Part III, each of the classes of the Main Tables is analyzed individually. To this purpose, a common structure was used to study each class. The practical dimension of this manual gains expression with the exercises that are proposed at the end of each class, offering students and professionals the opportunity to solidify their learning and to check their results through the solutions found at the end of the book.

Abstract

This work presents a method to detect and classify varnish defects on wood surfaces. Since these defects are only partially visible under certain illumination directions, one image doesn't provide enough information for a recognition task. A classification requires inspecting the surface under different illumination directions, which results in image series. The information is distributed along this series and can be extracted by merging the knowledge about the defect shape and light direction.

Abstract

Big data is revolutionizing our ability to measure and study the human brain. New technology increases the resolution of images that are being study as well as enables researchers to study the brain as it functions. These technological advances are combined with efforts to collect neuroimaging data on large numbers of subjects, in some cases longitudinally. This combination of advances in measurement and scope of studies requires novel development in the statistical analysis. Fast, scalable, robust and accurate models and approaches need to be developed to make headway on these problems. This volume represents a unique collection of researchers providing deep insights on the statistical analysis of big neuroimaging data.

Abstract

Abstract

In this work, different methods for material classification by hyperspectral images in the near infrared range are investigated. Specifically, the design of problem-adapted camera systems and the choice of optimal optical filters are discussed. In addition, a method for the fusion of multiple camera signals by spectral unmixing is presented.

Abstract

The "Pannonische Glanztonware" (PGW) is a type of ceramics, which was wide-spread in Pannonia from the end of the 1st well into the 3rd century A.D. It is a product of local potteries, in which the influence of ceramics in the La Tène tradition and of imported Roman ceramics joined to create a new, typical Pannonian ware.In the PGW was produced exclusively table ware. The shapes of the vessels are to a large extent taken over from the Terra Sigillata resp. influenced by it; some of them also show the influence of the raetic-germanic area and the local utility ware. The vessels have a fine paste, a slip and are fired at the beginning of production, in most cases in a reducing atmosphere. But from the beginning oxidized fired pieces also appeared; their portion is - regionally scattered - increasing in the 3rd century.A number of the vessels are decorated in a for typical PGW way with stamps either inside at the base or outside; most of them, however are undecorated. The basis of the investigations into the PGW are the finds, which were unearthened at the excavations 1977-1988 conducted by H. Stiglitz in the auxiliary fort of Carnuntum. The finds of the "Steinkastell I" and the over it lying levelling layer give a representative view of the PGW in the second third of the 2nd century in the area of Carnuntum. On the basis of the finds published here, a open classification-system was created, so that it can be expanded with further finds, which are until now only known from unpublished locations or from other publications.Regarding the material of the vessels five fabrics ("STyp 1-5") and four types of slip ("ÜTyp A-D") could be distinguished. Petrographic and heavy mineral analysis, which were carried out by R. Sauer, showed that the vessels of fabric 2, 3 and 5 were probably produced in the area of Carnuntum.Apart from the emphasis on north-western Pannonia, which results from the basis of the finds of Carnuntum, a summary is given of the spectrum of the PGW, the potter's stamps, workshops and finds from dated locations in eastern and south-western Pannonia. A short discourse on the stamped ceramics found in south-eastern Pannonia, Moesia and Dacia completes the picture.

Abstract

In 2007, Jeremy Jass proposed a molecular classification of colorectal cancer including KRAS, BRAF, Mismatch Repair, CIMP and MGMT Status. Since then, many prognostic and predictive studies have been published on this topic, mainly focusing on one single molecular marker. The aim of the e-book is to summarize the knowledge in 2014 from a multidisciplinary point of view that can potentially be used as a manual by CRC researchers in every field.

Abstract

Despite the richness of its facets, the short religious epic has been largely neglected by scholars until now. This study explores this literary phenomenon using a multi-perspectival descriptive model. Extensive detailed case studies provide basic information and present the genre in its broader literary historical and systematic context.
