Abstract

Carolingian monasteries were the most important agents for the transfer of knowledge and scientific methods during the early middle ages. This publication examines contemporary vehicles and recipients that were involved in the Carolingian knowledge system and guided the transmission and selection of knowledge. The study focuses on the Abbey of Lorsch with its extraordinary manuscript collection and unique library.

Abstract

The examination of literary and cultural transfer processes in the colonial Caribbean allows completely new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation. Racist discourses, established models of white abolitionists, politics of remembrance and the hitherto neglected role of the Haitian Revolution combine to an amalgam that questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity.

Abstract

The tenth volume of the Lage Landen Studies explores the road of an original Dutch-language book from its original version to the translation that arrives into the hands of a non-native reader. This collection of research articles features literary translations with Dutch as source language. The authors pay special attention to production-specific aspects of the literary transfer process: What are the conditions to make a translation? Who is involved in the process? What part do translators and institutions play? Which norms determine the production and distribution of translated texts? In their contributions on transfer to the German, English, French, Indonesian, Russian and Czech language, the authors mention different aspects that are mainly new to the cultural transfer of Dutch-language literature abroad and/or give new impulses to its research.

Abstract

The different written and archaeological sources give a very heterogeneous picture of the social and religious structures in Eastern Middle Europe. Recent developments in modern archaeological and historical research have shown new approaches to the analysis of elites. In every society there is a leading minority, who cumulates both wealth and prestige and is characterized by an elevated social rank, reputation and acceptance. An external marker of these elites is especially the superregional transfer of certain items, but also of the culturally encoded value systems. The present study asks whether this notion of cultural transfer, developed in the context of modern history, can be applied as well to the study of mutual influences between the elites of medieval Western and Eastern Middle Europe. It also raises the question if this terminology is equally useful for the analysis of written and material sources, and to what extent it might open a new perspective on the rich but as yet often unexplored history of the lands east of the Elbe river.

Abstract

Abstract

This volume discusses a practical approach to cultural transfer and exchange through the concept of »memory box«. Ideas of displacement, transfer, and cultural memory are explored through case studies from Scotland to Italy and Germany and from Finland and France to the American colonies. The authors develop an understanding of memory boxes as cultural constructions that are involved in the process of making and disputing memory – but which, simultaneously, are important agents for cultural transfer over space and time. This book emphasises »memory box« as an idea that allows us to study the cultural processes of transfer in conjunction with cultural memory.

Abstract

Forgeries are an omnipresent part of our culture. They are closely related to historically and culturally informed ideas of authenticity, legality, authorship, creativity, tradition and innovation. Based on the concept of mimesis, the volume illustrates that forgeries are thus not to be understood as a negative copy or disgraced rip-off of an original – but as an autonomous aesthetic practice, a creative act in itself. The contributions focus on such different implementations such as faked traditions, pseudotranslations, imposters, identity theft, and hoaxes in different arts and historic contexts. Most importantly, they scrutinize the bonds and borders between original and forgery, and turn out their epistemic capability.
