Abstract

In March 2014, the e-maillist of the European Academic Network on RomaniStudies1 hosted a discussion on definitions of the population known as ‘Roma’.It began when one of the subscribers to the list – which at the time broughttogether some 350 academics who specialised in Romani/Gypsy studies – askedfor reactions to two generalisations which she came across while preparing alegal review of a document on cultural rights: (1) that all Roma speak a varietyof the same language, Romanes; and (2) that Roma generally consider themselvesto be a nation. Some two-dozenscholars posted their reactions, whichtogether offer a fairly exhaustive summary of contemporary views on the subject

Abstract

The present volume comprises 6 highly original studies on material text cultures in different nontypographic societies stretching from the 3rd millennium cuneiform textual record of Ancient Mesopotamia to 20th century Qur’anic boards of northern and central African provenience. The volume provides a multidisciplinary approach to material text cultures complementary to the interdisciplinary, strongly theory-grounded research scheme of the CRC 933.

Abstract

Abstract

How did two radically different legal cultures, those of the Ottomans and the Chinese, gradually acquire a legal architecture analogous to that of Europe? This Paper attempts to answer this question by providing a comparative study in legal history of the rise and demise of extraterritorial consular jurisdiction, utilizing a post-colonial and inter-disciplinary approach to international law. The study reveals that the establishment of consular jurisdiction during the nineteenth century was cl...

Abstract

This book presents 12 papers about the influences of the classical tradition (Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian mythologies, Greek and Renaissance philosophy, classical theatre, etc.) in Spanish modern and contemporary cultural production, with special focus on literature, popular culture and cinema. Within the wide range of proposed studies, the monograph is divided into three thematic sections. The first unit investigates the subjective poetics in authors who are focused on the theme of exile and on the The Odyssey’s imaginary. After that, the book focuses on the presence of female mythological matrices in the recent Hispanic literature. The last section is devoted to theoretical studies on relations between mythologisation and fictionality in the cultural artifacts of the Hispanic world.

Abstract

The tendency of 21st century studies about the table has been to privilege as multi and transdisciplinary approaches. In fact, it is in its holistic sense that we use the term table, a universe that encompasses goods, people and ideas. Reflect today toward the table constitutes a process of careful inquiry into three of the main pillars of the man’s relationship with food, throughout its history: food, health and culture. This book is the subject of Lusophone Tables and is organized in two volumes, containing five parts and a total of 25 chapters. The 13 chapters of the first volume focus on two central themes: food under the therapeutic and symbolic prism. In Part I (Therapeutic Tables: when food is medicine), it is evident that, historically, medical writings preceded the culinary literature. Part II (Sacred Tables: when food is a symbol) is referred to the table as answer and vehicle of dialogue with the transcendent.
