Abstract

The most important drivers of driver assistance systems are improving driving safety and energy efficiency. In many cases, energy-efficient driving also implies a safe driving technique. In some cases, however, energy-efficient driving can lead to a decline in driving safety. This work therefore investigates whether an energy-efficient driving style by the forward vehicle leads to a decline in driving safety.

Abstract

In partially automated driver assistance systems it remains to the drivers to monitor the system's behavior on errors and to intervene in critical situations. It is the goal of the current research to further analyze the advantages and disadvantages of such systems. Within the exemplary situational context of partially automation in traffic-jams, new ways of interaction to enhance the drivers' ability to react to critical situations are derived and evaluated.

Abstract

As a contribution to environmental protection, the EU tyre label was introduced. However, the best label value does not necessarily imply the lowest rolling resistance under real operating conditions. This research work aims to develop a model to predict the rolling losses of car tyres based on standardized rolling resistance measurements. Using this model, the rolling resistance at variable operating parameters will be predicted.

Abstract

In order to establish general principles in the topic of motion planning for fully-automated driving, an intuitive problem statement in the form of an Euler–Lagrange Model is derived and transformed into a corresponding Hidden Markov Model for global optimization. Geometric and topologic considerations lead to a probabilistic environment modelling in combination with the C² model and result in general conclusions about the structure of traffic situations.

Abstract

For ecological und economic reasons, special attention is paid to the energy balance of rail-bound, local, direct current-based transport systems. With the tram and urban railway network of Karlsruhe being used as an example, 16 simulation scenarios with different measures for energy optimization are analysed in a coupled computation of driving cycles and energy flows.

Nowadays drivers have to get along with an increasing complex visual environment in road traffic. There are not only distractions available within the vehicle, like radio, navigation system and passengers. The environment outside the car becomes also more and more complex. Car drivers&#8217; gaze behaviour while being distracted is studied on the basis of some examples. Furthermore different performance indicators are analysed.

Abstract

This work systematically describes the mechanisms of tyre/road noise atdriving and braking torque based on measurements with different tyres. The studies on the influence of circumferential force on tyre/road noise can be divided into two different tire tread designs. One sub-chapter reports about a selective influence of force induced tyre/road noise using inclined groove edges. The influence of the circumferential stiffness of the tread blocks on the tyre/road noise is discussed afterwards.

Abstract

This Special Issue presents a selection of current solutions for vehicle surroundings perception systems. This perception is essential for many advanced driver application systems and autonomous driving, and there are currently several challenges that need addressing. Perception can be obtained using on-board sensors, but, due to their limitations, the development of sensor fusion techniques or specific algorithms is needed. Vehicle positioning is also important, but further refined accuracy and specific requirements arise with each new application. Apart from on-board sensors, wireless communication can provide information from a larger electronic horizon that can be used for better decision making. Abstract

The book at hand shows possibilities to derive requirements from customers’ usage behaviour based on recorded vehicle data. The focus lies on the derivation of mobility and driving profiles for a computer aided calculation of the fuel consumption. On this basis, the calculated fuel consumption is integrated into the creation of life cycle assessments and total cost of ownership calculations in order to evaluate vehicle concepts.
