Esta publicación reúne nueve intervenciones realizadas en el marco de la movilización de las y los científicas/os contra el ajuste y el rediseño de la política científica impulsados por el gobierno nacional argentino bajo el control de la Alianza Cambiemos. La política científica en disputa: diagnósticos y propuestas frente a su reorientación regresiva aborda, desde una perspectiva integral, los desafíos y las diversas aristas de la producción, circulación y apropiación del conocimiento, así como una contextualización de la coyuntura de la lucha de becaries e investigadores en defensa de la ciencia pública. Investigación, docencia y extensión son tratadas por les expositores como una tríada relacional que exige una mirada integral acerca de los alcances y significados de la misión del sistema científico. La producción de conocimiento se muestra así como un campo en disputa atravesado por lo político y la política que nos interpela acerca de cómo, para qué y con quiénes seguir haciendo ciencia pública en la Argentina.

Abstract

This new book discusses the extent to which the Japanese economy encourages entrepreneurship and innovation. Although Japan has a strong reputation as an innovator, some people argue that this reputation is misplaced. Contrary to earlier expectations, the USA rather than Japan emerged as the leader in the biotech industries in the 1990s, and also many small firms in Japan supply only a few – or just one – other company, thereby limiting their view of the marketplace and the commercial opportunities within it. Despite the increase of international patents, international scientific citations and a positive technology trade balance, the Japanese innovation system is weak in giving birth to radical innovations. The book explores fully these issues, making comparisons with other countries where appropriate. It concludes that the Japanese innovation system has both advantages and disadvantages and contributes to a better understanding of how policy changes take place.

Abstract

The development of special and general relativity has relied significantly on ideas of symmetry. Similarly, modern efforts to test these theories have often sought either violations or extensions of the symmetries seen, and symmetry is regularly used a tool in seeking new applications. Abstract

The present volume examines the usefulness of a particular set of concepts and processes of change studying their applicability to a range of linguistic changes in Spanish and Latin that cannot be easily or can only be partially accounted for within the framework of grammaticalization. Rather than challenging the insights of grammaticalization theory, the different contributions to this monograph demonstrate that exaptation, capitalization, refunctionalization and adfunctionalization, as well as changes motivated by rhetorical guidelines, constitute interesting and valuable notions that allow for a better understanding of specific language changes in Spanish and, by extension, of language change in general.

Abstract

Following the tremendous reception of our first volume on topological groups called ""Topological Groups: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow"", we now present our second volume. Like the first volume, this collection contains articles by some of the best scholars in the world on topological groups. A feature of the first volume was surveys, and we continue that tradition in this volume with three new surveys. These surveys are of interest not only to the expert but also to those who are less experienced. Particularly exciting to active researchers, especially young researchers, is the inclusion of over three dozen open questions. This volume consists of 11 papers containing many new and interesting results and examples across the spectrum of topological group theory and related topics. Abstract

The proliferation of powerful but cheap devices, together with the availability of a plethora of wireless technologies, has pushed for the spread of the Wireless Internet of Things (WIoT), which is typically much more heterogeneous, dynamic, and general-purpose if compared with the traditional IoT. The WIoT is characterized by the dynamic interaction of traditional infrastructure-side devices, e.g., sensors and actuators, provided by municipalities in Smart City infrastructures, and other portable and more opportunistic ones, such as mobile smartphones, opportunistically integrated to dynamically extend and enhance the WIoT environment. A key enabler of this vision is the advancement of software and middleware technologies in various mobile-related sectors, ranging from the effective synergic management of wireless communications to mobility/adaptivity support in operating systems and differentiated integration and management of devices with heterogeneous capabilities in middleware, from horizontal support to crowdsourcing in different application domains to dynamic offloading to cloud resources, only to mention a few. The book presents state-of-the-art contributions in the articulated WIoT area by providing novel insights about the development and adoption of middleware solutions to enable the WIoT vision in a wide spectrum of heterogeneous scenarios, ranging from industrial environments to educational devices. The presented solutions provide readers with differentiated point of views, by demonstrating how the WIoT vision can be applied to several aspects of our daily life in a pervasive manner.

Abstract

This Special Issue covers a wide range of topics from fundamental studies to applications of ionized gases. It is dedicated to four topics of interest: 1. Abstract

While group IV or III-V based device technologies have reached their technical limitations (e.g., limited detection wavelength range or low power handling capability), wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors which have band-gaps greater than 3 eV have gained significant attention in recent years as a key semiconductor material in high-performance optoelectronic and electronic devices. These WBG semiconductors have two definitive advantages for optoelectronic and electronic applications due to their large bandgap energy. WBG energy is suitable to absorb or emit ultraviolet (UV) light in optoelectronic devices. It also provides a higher electric breakdown field, which allows electronic devices to possess higher breakdown voltages. This Special Issue seeks research papers, short communications, and review articles that focus on novel synthesis, processing, designs, fabrication, and modeling of various WBG semiconductor power electronics and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract

This book presents interesting samples of theoretical and practical advances of symmetry in multidisciplinary engineering applications. It covers several applications, such as accessibility and traffic congestion management, path planning for mobile robots, analysis of shipment service networks, fault diagnosis methods in electrical circuits and electrical machines, geometrical issues in architecture, geometric modeling and virtual reconstruction, design of noise detectors, filters, and segmentation methods for image processing, and cyclic symmetric structures in turbomachinery applications, to name but a few.
