Abstract

By the turn of the twentieth century the British nation’s declining birthrate
was increasingly the subject of anxious public and scientific debate, as
the Registrar General’s annual reports continued to confirm a downward
national trend, which had in fact commenced from the late 1870s.

Abstract

This volume is a necessarily multidisciplinary collection dedicated to the
extremely difficult task of uncovering and exploring what can be reconstructed
of the dimensions and the scale of the historical impact of sexually
transmitted infections (STIs) on human infertility. As a subject for inquiry,
this comes close to Winston Churchill’s celebrated phrase, “a riddle, wrapped
in a mystery, inside an enigma.”

Abstract

Male and female reproductive system similarities as well as differences should be taken into consideration by all scientists interested in this field. Some embryological, anatomical, histological, and clinical examples are addressed in this book. The message of the book is to increase orientation of all scientists interested in the field of similar and dissimilar issues in males and females. Reading this book will lead to a better understanding of management of both sexes, and the understanding of infertility that will hopefully reduce the effort, the time, the psychological, and the financial burden of the infertile couple and the society at large.

Abstract

This book describes recent findings on androgens. The chapters include information on physiological and pathological conditions such as alteration in testosterone production by Leydig cells, prostate cancer, and metabolic disorders. Moreover, this book refers to the potential use of androgens in assisted human reproduction treatments and bovine breeding. Since each chapter contains background information based on evidence and emphasizes basic science, this book is aimed at professionals who already have a basic understanding of the principles of androgen biochemistry and endocrine-related diseases.

Abstract

This book contains a translation, with a brief introduction, of five Hippocratic treatises on gynaecological topics. Botanical and medical notes update the translation. The treaties are about fetuses and women’s infertility. Therefore they speak about problematic births and dead fetuses; procedures to detect a pregnancy, promote fertilization and clean the uterus when there is an abortion. The team gathered to carry out this book aimed to present the Hippocratic treatises with the eyes of Yesterday and Today, in order to evaluate unrealistic ideas coming from oral knowledge along with scientifically valid procedures

Abstract

The endometrium has been the subject of intense research in a variety of clinical settings, because of its importance in the reproductive process and its role in women’s health. In the past 15 years, significant efforts have been invested in defining the molecular phenotype of the receptive phase endometrium as well as of various endometrial pathologies. Although this has generated a wealth of information on the molecular landscape of human endometrium, there is a need to complement this information in light of the novel methodologies and innovative technical approaches. The focus of this International Journal of Molecular Sciences Special Issue is on molecular and cellular mechanisms of endometrium and endometrium-related disorders. The progress made in the molecular actions of steroids, in the metabolism of steroids and intracrinology, in endometrial intracellular pathways, in stem cells biology, as well as in the molecular alterations underlying endometrium-related pathologies has been the focus of the reviews and papers included.
