Abstract

The process of user-centered innovation: how it can benefit both users and manufacturers and how its emergence will bring changes in business models and in public policy.Innovation is rapidly becoming democratized. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users—both individuals and firms—often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging system of user-centered innovation. He explains why and when users find it profitable to develop new products and services for themselves, and why it often pays users to reveal their innovations freely for the use of all.The trend toward democratized innovation can be seen in software and information products—most notably in the free and open-source software movement—but also in physical products. Von Hippel's many examples of user innovation in action range from surgical equipment to surfboards to software security features. He shows that product and service development is concentrated among "lead users," who are ahead on marketplace trends and whose innovations are often commercially attractive.Von Hippel argues that manufacturers should redesign their innovation processes and that they should systematically seek out innovations developed by users. He points to businesses—the custom semiconductor industry is one example—that have learned to assist user-innovators by providing them with toolkits for developing new products. User innovation has a positive impact on social welfare, and von Hippel proposes that government policies, including R&D subsidies and tax credits, should be realigned to eliminate biases against it. The goal of a democratized user-centered innovation system, says von Hippel, is well worth striving for. An electronic version of this book is available under a Creative Commons license.

Abstract

Over the past decade, efforts been have intensified to establish a viable location for modern biotechnologies in the Hamburg region. The growing intensity of Hamburg's biotechnological support can be seen as a reflection on the drastic slump of newly founded biotechnology companies that took place in previous years. Numerous companies disappeared from the scene after a short period of time despite good concepts and good technologies. Against this background the lecture series "Strategies of Biotechnological Innovation" was held in the winter semester 2004/2005 at the Research Center for Biotechnology, Society and Environment (BIOGUM) of the University of Hamburg. Its aim was to examine the possibilities, problems and limitations of innovation management from different perspectives. The texts of this volume are based on lectures given by the contributors in the context of this lecture series.

Abstract

Abstract

The term “Cyberlearning” is used in the United States to describe a community of researchers, largely funded by the US National Science Foundation, who are exploring the integration of computer science research with learning sciences research. The Cyberlearning community is parallel to the EC-TEL community and the purpose of this poster is to foster mutual engagement between the communities. The paper describes the origin of the term, the conception of the field, the kinds of research being conducted, and some of the exemplary projects. The paper will also introduce the Center for Innovative Research in Cyberlearning (CIRCL), which is the hub of the knowledge network (research community) for cyberlearning and hosts a useful collection of resources.

Abstract

This chapter describes the evolution of Responsible Innovation (RI) and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) as two significant discourses emerging over the last decade. RI is a discourse with strong academic roots. Anchored in a future-oriented notion of responsibility, it envisions the integration and embedding of capacities for anticipation, reflexivity, inclusive deliberation and responsiveness in and around the processes of innovation and techno-visionary science aimed at this. RRI emerged in contrast as a policy discourse from the European Commission’s Science in Society programme. While its early formulation shared much with the discourse of RI, over time it has become more instrumentally and prosaically framed around a package of five ‘EC RRI’ keys – gender, ethics, public engagement, open access and science education. After analysing and critiquing the main features of these discourses we consider their translation into policy and practice, before concluding with research gaps for future study.

Abstract

In a majority of knowledge-intensive technologies, empirical studies show characteristic double boom patterns of research activities. After an initial increase of efforts, research activities drop, only to rise again after a certain period. As a reason for this interim weakening the literature presumes a temporary disillusionment among economic actors. The present work questions this assumption. Instead, it is argued that a general purpose technology is replacing its techno-economic predecessor.

Abstract

Throughout the ages, humans have applied knowledge and know-how to master materials. They have gone from materials encountered by chance available in their environment to customized materials designed to meet multi-criteria specifications. Today, owing particularly to digital modelling on different scales, we are able to design high-performance materials, combining various classes of materials, in controlled geometries and dimensions. These innovation strategies – architectured or bio-inspire...

Abstract

Abstract

The environment in which a company or organization operates today can be characterizedby accelerating change, the globalization of markets, the emergence of new technologies andcompetitors, new regulatory requirements and ever more demanding users and citizens. In thisenvironment, the ability to innovate becomes a key success factor for most organizations. Theyseek to continuously create and realize value by introducing new or changed products, services, processes, models, methods, etc.The reasons for an organization to innovate are many and can include to increase revenues, growth and profitability, reduce costs and waste, increase the satisfaction of users, customers andcitizens, motivate employees and attract partners, collaborators and funding, and so on. Engagingin innovation activities is thus a way for an organization to be future focused and effectivelydeliver on its overall objectives to secure prosperity and longer-term relevance and survival. The ability to innovate and to make it a core organizational capability is increasingly becomingthe most important differentiator and dominant success factor of organizations. Failing tocapture new opportunities and to respond to innovation challenges may consequently lead tostagnation, irrelevance and ultimately to the demise of the organization.
