Abstract

From a tender age Giuseppe Dessí was in the habit of entrusting to private writings the unquiet story of his formation, recording against the background of significant vital abodes the events of his life, his reading and his encounters … Franca Linari, who has for some time been studying the relations between the writing of diaries and narrative composition, after the critical edition of the Diaries 1926 –1931 and 1931–1948 (Roma, Jouvence, 1993 and 1999), is now proposing this new collection, philologically impeccable and attentively annotated, which makes it possible to reappraise years subjectively rich in changes and in artistic creation (in the form of stories, work for the theatre, collaboration with important journals), in the cultural and political climate of post-war Italy.

Abstract

Carlo Antici e l'ideologia della Restaurazione in Italia traces Antici's career as an essayist, translator of works of the Catholic Restoration and contributor to journals. This appraisal brings to light the link (albeit not designatory) with the ideology of conservative romanticism, as witnessed by the citations from Chateaubriand, the early Lamennais and De Maistre. Penned in the form of utopian essay, Antici's standpoint tends towards a theocratic concept and a renewed patrimonialist vision of the State, surfacing in the hope of an Empire-Papacy combination. The relationship with Giacomo Leopardi in its turn triggers a series of suggestions for reading destined to be independently reworked by a nephew anything but deaf to dialogue with his uncle, readings that range from the ancients, especially Greek, to the aforementioned contemporary French Catholic writers.

Abstract

This text proposes a rereading of the Decameron that traces the female figures - 'constrained' as we are told in the Proem, by the 'wishes', 'desires' and 'orders' of fathers, mothers, brothers and husbands - in their attempt to open up areas of personal life. The possession of the female body, considered as part of the family property in a social context governed by a commercial rationale, is an instrument of the violence characterising all social relations, which Boccaccio indicates as a cause for the wrath of God that exploded in the plague of 1348. Moreover, their bodies also become an instrument in the hands of the women themselves when they decide - with all the ambiguity which the context imposed (even on the author) - to repossess the same to use it as a weapon of revenge, an occasion of joy or a gift of love.

Abstract

Twenty years ago a unique figure in the history of our country returned dramatically to the world of the "drowned", one of the spectral "saved" who had found the strength to testify the dramas of the twentieth century: Primo Levi. On the twentieth anniversary of his death, Firenze University Press has decided to revive his lesson with a tribute that is not intended as a celebration, but rather as a pause for refection in which we can listen again to the words of this great writer, dissected and scrutinised the world over, generating germs of memory hopefully as universal as the mathematical and geometrical signs and the chemical formulas he so loved. Voci dal mondo per Primo Levi. In memoria, per la memoria edited by Luigi Dei, a lecturer in physical chemistry at the University of Florence, consists of fifteen short essays contributed by a polyhedric group of writers from various parts of the world and of different educational and professional backgrounds.

Abstract

At bottom, youth also – and perhaps primarily – serves this purpose: to make room for the other, that is deconstructing oneself with a view to a reconstruction that is always implied in such a perspective. Moreover, those who do not manage to do so when they are young will have greater difficulty making room for the gift of the other when they are old, unless they wish to identify with that gift, albeit threatening the survival of critical capacity with a belated and excessive display of the self to the other. Abstract

This book, the result of a lengthy labour of cataloguing and research, continues the indexing and recording of the unpublished epistolary material conserved in the Dessí fond, launched in 2003 by Chiara Andrei with the edition of the family correspondence (Firenze, FUP). Now, through 1,900 letters from friends and readers, Francesca Nencioni offers a different and more ample overview of the fundamental stages in the life and works of the writer, focusing above all on the years of his university training in Pisa. Of particular interest is the appendix of carefully annotated unpublished texts, which offers 19 letters from Dessí to friends and scholars, the complete two-way correspondence with Walter Binni, and the letters sent to the friend and disciple of the great historian, Delio Cantimori.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The correspondence between Renato Fucini and Emilia Peruzzi, which embraces a period of time comprised between 1871 and 1899, provides a colourful picture of late nineteenth-century Florentine and Italian society. Parading before our eyes are leading figures from Italian political and literary circles, such as Sonnino, Pareto, De Amicis and Ada Negri, who were part of the prestigious entourage that gravitated around the Peruzzi salon. The letters contained in the book throw new light on the personality of Fucini, while at the same time elucidating the biographical details of his life which are still little known and studied.
