Abstract

This Special Issue of Sustainability reports on recent research aiming to make the freight transport sector more sustainable. The sector faces significant challenges in different domains of sustainability, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the management of health and safety impacts. In particular, the intention to decarbonise the sector’s activities has led to a strong increase in research efforts—this is also the main focus of the Special Issue. Sustainable freight transport operations represent a significant challenge with multiple technical, operational, and political aspects. The design, testing, and implementation of interventions require multi-disciplinary, multi-country research. Promising interventions are not limited to introducing new transport technologies, but also include changes in framework conditions for transport, in terms of production and logistics processes. Due to the uncertainty of impacts, the number of stakeholders, and the difficulty of optimizing across actors, understanding the impacts of these measures is not a trivial problem. Therefore, research is not only needed on the design and evaluation of individual interventions, but also on the approach of their joint deployment through a concerted public/private programme. This Special Issue addresses both dimensions, in two distinct groups of papers—the programming of interventions and the individual sustainability measures themselves.

Abstract

"Supply-chain preparedness means to design inter-organisational structures,to organise supply-chain resources, and to plan and train to ensure efficientresponse if this is called for. Acknowledging that supply chains are made up oftwo or more organisations, and that interaction describes relations between two ormore actors, the purpose of this research is to explore whether the introduction ofthe concept of interaction (samhandling) to supply-chain thinking adds to our understandingof efficiency and the effectiveness of logistics preparedness. We position our work along three dimensions: a profit – non-profit classification,a descriptive – normative dichotomy, and a micro – macro continuum. Informationwas retrieved both through semi-structured interviews and by studying secondarysources. Interaction and preparedness is assessed through an empirical case: theoperation Atalanta. By applying interactional indicators, enablers and barriers torelationship success can be studied at both micro, meso, and macro levels. Withoutunderstanding the mechanisms leading to interactional competence, success (orthe lack thereof) in supply-chain preparedness is difficult to address properly. Thus, managers need to assess the interactional constructs at all levels when planning andtraining for preparedness."

Abstract

Companies with high-performing supply chains enjoy essential competitive ad- vantages. However, supply chain management faces an environment of rising risk that endangers these competitive advantages. One of the reasons is to outsource parts of their business. This bears the risk of significantly increased lead times and lead time variability. It is the impact of lead time variability on inventory management that is the central aspect of this book. It describes a mathematical model for dual sourcing with two reorder points, shows the deviation between stochastic and deterministic calculations in a sensitivity analysis, and investigates different relaxations of a traditional dual-sourcing policy.

Abstract

This edited volume contains the selected papers presented at the scientific board meeting of the German Cluster of Excellence on “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries”, held in November 2014. The topical structure of the book is clustered in six sessions: Integrative Production Technology, Individualised Production, Virtual Production Systems, Integrated Technologies, Self-Optimising Production Systems and Human Factors in Production Technology. The Aachen perspective on a holistic theory of production is complemented by conference papers from external leading researchers in the fields of production, materials science and bordering disciplines. The target audience primarily comprises research experts and practitioners in the field but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.

Abstract

Lean management describes a set of methods combined with a management philosophy which aims at eliminating waste in logistics processes. In production logistics, lean is already widespread and applied successfully. Research has shown that lean also works in a warehousing environment. In transport logistics, lean is still at a low level of maturity in both research and practice. This work contributes to closing this gap by introducing Heijunka leveling to transport logistics.

Abstract

Several in-depth studies have verified the positive impact of lean techniques on performance indicators in production environments. Studies performed on warehouse environments have partially confirmed this. This thesis helped to close the gap between the disparities in the level of evidence mentioned above. A study was conducted that included 16 warehouses in an observation group and 56 warehouses in a control group. These significant results help close the gap in the evidence.

Abstract

Transports within industrial logistics networks are planned strategically. Due to the existence of uncertainties an operational control of transports is necessary. Thereby, dispatchers are today not supported adequately. A control approach for dynamic, complex and multimodal transports is developed, which intends to support or automate the operational control. The approach has a decentral and heterarchical organization, in which the goods and means of transports are modeled as agents.

Abstract

Scope of this work is the development of appropriate models for the evaluation of batch processes in material flow systems. The presented analytical methods support the long range planning in an early planning stage, in which capacities are determined to minimize the facility costs under the condition of cycle time targets.

Abstract

Based on the consolidation of the consignment volume of cooperating building materials traders, the logistics network will be improved and the transport efficiency of the cooperation partners will be increased. In addition to the development, the cooperation model will be evaluated by simulations on the basis of real data and the impact of the cooperation model for the total drive distance of the cooperation partners will be examined.

Abstract

This edited book presents new results in the area of algorithm development for different types of scheduling problems. In eleven chapters, algorithms for single machine problems, flow-shop and job-shop scheduling problems (including their hybrid (flexible) variants), the resource-constrained project scheduling problem, scheduling problems in complex manufacturing systems and supply chains, and workflow scheduling problems are given. The chapters address such subjects as insertion heuristics for energy-efficient scheduling, the re-scheduling of train traffic in real time, control algorithms for short-term scheduling in manufacturing systems, bi-objective optimization of tortilla production, scheduling problems with uncertain (interval) processing times, workflow scheduling for digital signal processor (DSP) clusters, and many more.
