Abstract

This open access book examines the economic, social, and psychological consequences of manufacturing plant closure at the individual level. Using an original data set of over 1,200 workers from Switzerland who lost their manufacturing jobs after the financial crisis of 2008, the author analyzes the determinants of reemployment, the sector of reemployment, and the change in wages over a two year period. In addition, coverage also explores how plant closure affects the social relationship between a displaced worker and his or her significant other, which includes a discussion of the coping strategies on the household level as well as how changes in a worker's social and occupational life affects overall satisfaction. Readers will discover that the burden of structural change disproportionately falls on the shoulders of workers aged 55 and older who often face substantial barriers when trying to return to employment. A larger portion of this group experience long-term unemployment and those who do manage to find a new job often suffer disproportionate wage loss. This result is intriguing in the context of the current demographic change and contradicts the common assumption that young and low-qualified individuals are at greatest risk of unemployment. Advanced age—and not low education—appears to be the primary obstacle to workers finding job satisfaction after being laid off because of market conditions.

Abstract

"Samhandling is considered as a key solution when asymmetry occurs. Anexpectation of seamless samhandling can be a special challenge to High ReliabilityOrganizationswhich have mechanistic traditions in common, i.e. an assumption oflinearity and routine-based work. In this chapter, a model to operationalize samhandlingis presented. This conceptual study is based on observational data from aninter-organizational exercise. A full-scale exercise of a train accident on the ÖresundBridge between Sweden and Denmark was observed. The overall goal of the exercisewas to effectively solve the situation. However, different routines contributed toconfusion and misunderstandings in the meeting on how to act. The exercise wasdominated by a focus on linearity within the internal organizations, which hinderedsamhandling. In order to conceptualize samhandling, a three-level model is presented. It consists of “sequential samhandling”, i.e. a simplified, assembly-line type workprocess, “parallel samhandling”, i.e. carrying out tasks simultaneously, and “synchronoussamhandling”, i.e. tasks performed at the same time in a spontaneous and naturalway. A three-level samhandling model such as the one presented can be a usefultool for managing disasters."

Abstract

This book discusses the important issue of the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of agricultural residue burning, common in agricultural practices in many parts of the world. In particular, it focuses on the pollution caused by rice residue burning using primary survey data from Punjab, India. It discusses emerging solutions to agricultural waste burning that are cost-effective in terms of both money and time. The burning of agricultural residue causes severe pollution in land, water and air and contributes to increased ozone levels and climate change in the long term. However, appropriate assessments have not been undertaken so far to demonstrate the relevant impact of agriculture-based pollution, especially residue burning. This book addresses this gap in the literature. Punjab has been used as a case study as it is the chief granary of India, contributing to 27.2 percent of the Indian national produce of rice and 43.8 percent of wheat. It is presumed that the findings from this state will be useful not only for other agricultural areas in India, but across the world. This book, therefore, sensitizes policy makers, researchers and students about the impacts of air pollution caused by agricultural residue burning---a subject not much dealt in the literature---and provides a way forward.

Abstract

The growth of cultural diversity in Finnish social and health care workplaces challenges to develop not only ways of working and interaction but also organizational structures. Work communities as a whole are facing new challenges. The aim of this book is to help work communities develop well-functioning practices for intercultural work. Effective interaction between cultures provides the foundation not only for the well-being of staff and customers, but also for the financial success of the organization. The paper presents five action studies in the social and health care organization, which analyzed the abrasion points of everyday interaction, developed functional practices and corrective measures, and evaluated the effects of interventions. The aim of the project was to bring about structural reforms in support of inter-cultural work, since only the changes would become permanent.

Abstract

"The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the importance of trust in militarysamhandling. Trust serves as one of the main prerequisites for effective collaboration(Kouzes & Posner, 2003). The Norwegian Armed Forces’ (NAF) core business isthe planning and execution of military operations (Forsvarsstaben, 2014). One ofthe main tasks of the NAF is to plan for the unexpected and, ultimately, for war. Thechapter further discuss trust in military leadership, and leadership and situationalawareness. Leadership as a social interaction process that builds trust is discussed, and samhandling is seen in a military context. A basic “trust-based model” of samhandlingis introduced and viewed in terms of internal and external framework factors. The chapter concludes that trust is still quite an open concept, and that trustis essential for the effective accomplishment of military missions. The basic trustmodel is an attempt to underline understanding of the importance of trust in amilitary planning and leadership context."

Abstract

"This study examines self-assessment of preparedness for unforeseen eventsand how it varies between groups and individuals according to roles and functionswithin an organization. The study has two objectives. The first is to analyse the relationshipbetween general self-efficacy, perceived competence in demanding situations andsocial support, and based on this, to assess the efficiency of interaction (samhandling)in organizations and preparedness for the unforeseen. The second aim is to examinehow these factors vary according to professional experience. A survey questionnairewas completed during winter 2016/2017. All 624 respondents were male or femaleemployees of the Norwegian Armed Forces, based in different units, with differentlevels of competence, and included commissioned and non-commissioned officers, officer cadets and conscripts. The response rate was 77 percent, and a total of 810personnel were approached. This study incorporates central concepts of individualand social resources that could permit the prediction and understanding of resilientbehaviors in complex and demanding situations. Interaction was found to be themost important predictor of preparedness for the unforeseen. This study also showsthat interaction combined with general self-efficacy and social support can accountfor a considerable proportion of the variance in preparedness for the unforeseen. Theresults indicate that it is possible to prepare for unforeseen events by implementingmeasures that improve social factors in particular."

Abstract

"The chapter presents a case from a government agency in Norway, wheretwo assistant directors share a leadership position and must interact extensively. Themain purpose is to highlight some benefits and challenges related to shared leadershipwhen it comes to risk prevention and handling unforeseen events. The analysisis based on a relational perspective that emphasizes that successful interaction betweenpeople requires complementary skills, conceptualized as relational skills. Thechapter concludes that the patterns of interaction and relational skills that developduring shared leadership can help prevent undesirable events. This is partly becauseshared leadership can provide increased capacity in identifying risks. Commonexperiences in handling risks and unforeseen events may contribute to learningthat in turn provides the potential for further development of the interactional andrelational skills in shared leadership. At the same time, shared leadership entailssome risks that may impact on the prevention and handling of such events. Forinstance, interactional challenges that may arise in a shared leadership may preventleaders from discovering potential hazards."

Abstract

"Military leaders are faced with high expectations when it comes to handlingunforeseen situations in joint military operations. This chapter aims to presenta nuanced professional and pedagogical discussion of how an increased awarenessof the concept of samhandling in the use of military doctrines may contribute tothe professionalization of military higher education. Different doctrines reflect differenttheoretical decisions. They are given relevance in education as a way to illustrateformal examples of what is preferred and what is rejected. As doctrines arebuilt on experiences from real-life scenarios, as well as on predictions and strategiesfor possible change, they may serve as a way of balancing the branch-specific “hiddencurriculum”, i.e. an established culture with a set of current values, behavior andthinking that have been developed over time in the organization. The findings inthe current case study indicate that military doctrines are regarded as important inleadership training at the Norwegian Military Academy, especially when it comesto understanding and guiding samhandling in unforeseen and risk-oriented situations. However, at the same time, the terms used to describe samhandling in militarydoctrines found relevant in education at the Norwegian Military Academy are numerous, vague and somewhat overlapping. It seems crucial to raise awareness of theunderlying processes and the relational ambition level that forms the basis of the chosenterm. It is advantageous to reach a collective understanding of the kind of skillsthat need to be developed and trained. Another benefit of such analysis is to provide abasis for clarified learning goals and practical scenario development through exercisesand other teaching plans in leadership education, as well as the evaluation of this, both in terms of learning outcomes and education as a whole."
