Abstract

With the recent advances in nanotechnology, plasma nanofabrication has become an exciting new niche because plasma-based approaches can deliver unique structures at the nanoscale that cannot be achieved by other techniques and/or in a more economical and environmentally friendly manner. Over the last decade, there have been exiting breakthroughs in the utilization of plasma processes in the fabrication of a rich diversity of nanomaterials and nanoengineered coatings. Examples include nanowires, nanotubes, nanoparticles, and nanotextured coatings. Some of these materials can simply not be derived by conventional means while many others have remarkable plasma-induced properties setting them apart from their traditional analogue. These materials are revolutionizing a spectrum of fields, ranging from electronics to biology and medicine. The goal of this Book is to present some of the latest advances in the fields of plasma assisted nanoengineering and nanofabrication and their application to modern technologies. In addition, the Book aims at highlighting current challenges and obstacles that lie on the path to fully understand the fundamental physical phenomena underlying the plasma facilitated fabrication of nanomaterials. Further, this Book intends to provide guidance to researchers in the field and inform the community of exciting future directions.

Abstract

In 1979 Tajima and Dawson, Tajima & Dawson (1979), on the basis of theoretical work and simulations, have shown that relativistic plasma waves are suitable for the development of&#xD;&#xD;compact accelerators. In the proposed schemes, electrons were injected externally and were&#xD;&#xD;accelerated through the very high electric field (GV/m) sustained by relativistic plasma waves&#xD;&#xD;driven by lasers, in the laser beatwave regime or in the laser wakefield regime. Several&#xD;&#xD;experiments have been performed following their idea and injected electrons at the few&#xD;&#xD;MeV level have indeed been accelerated by electric fields in the GV/m range in a plasma&#xD;&#xD;medium using the beat wave and laser wakefield schemes. With the development of more&#xD;&#xD;powerful lasers, much higher electric fields were achieved, from few GV/m to more than 1&#xD;&#xD;TV/m, Malka et al. (2002).

Abstract

In the textile market industry, technical textiles are one of the fastest growing businesses. Part of that industry consists of textiles for medical and healthcare applications and are responsible for a continuous increase in its market potential [1]. Next to their need in hospital environments, there is a growing demand in other sectors such as the food and hotel industry, due to stricter hygiene regulations. In most cases biomedical textile meets a well-defined set of requirements such as minimizing non-specific protein adsorption, drug delivery coatings or the presence of active functional coatings and most importantly excellent biocompatibility (blood-, tissue-or cyto-compatibility) [2]. In general there are very few materials meeting all these characteristics, while at the same time offering the needed structural and mechanical properties. Furthermore, depending on the application, the production process has to be cost-effective and approved by local legislation.

Abstract

Der Ersatz von Quecksilber in Gasentladungslampen ist Gegenstand aktueller Forschung. Hierbei ist ein elektrodenloser Betrieb von Vorteil. Eine Möglichkeit hierfür ist die Anregung mittels plasmageführter Mikrowellen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf Lampenfüllungen auf Indiumiodidbasis. Diese Entladungen zeichnen sich durch eine stark ausgeprägte Untergrundstrahlung mit sehr hohen Farbwiedergabeindizes aus. Die Strahlung wurde auf die molekulare Emission des Indiumiodids zurückgeführt.

Abstract

Mit dielektrisch behinderten Entladungen (DBE) ist es möglich Lichtquellen auf dem Prinzip der Leuchtstofflampe quecksilberfrei und flächig in beliebiger Form zu gestalten.Charakteristisch für die DBE ist die Abhängigkeit der Entladungsform und -effizienz von der elektrischen Anregung. Für ein besseres Verständnis der Vorgänge im Plasma der DBE wird hier ein analoges Messverfahren vorgestellt, dass die Bestimmung der inneren elektrischen Größen erlaubt. Die sich aus den Messergebnissen ergebenen Widersprüche des bisherigen einfachen elektrischen Modells basieren auf der Vernachlässigung des induzierten Raumladungsfeldes. Das Ladungstransportmodell liefert hierfür eine Methode zur Aufteilung der angelegten Spannung in eine Raumladungs- und eine Anregungskomponente.

Abstract

Non-thermal plasma technology is one of those techniques that suffer relatively little from diffusion limits, slow kinetics, and complex geometries compared to more traditional liquid-based chemical surface modification techniques. Combined with a lack of solvents, preservation of the bulk properties, and fast treatment times; it is a well-liked technique for the treatment of materials for biomedical applications. In this book chapter, a review will be given on what the scientific community determined to be essential to obtain appropriate scaffolds for tissue engineering and how plasma scientists have used non-thermal plasma technology to accomplish this. A distinction will be made depending on the scaffold fabrication technique, as each technique has its own set of specific problems that need to be tackled. Fabrication techniques will include traditional fabrication methods, rapid prototyping, and electrospinning. As for the different plasma techniques, both plasma activation and grafting/polymerization will be included in the review and linked to the in-vitro/in-vivo response to these treatments. The literature review itself is preceded by a more general overview on cell communication, giving useful insights on how surface modification strategies should be developed.

Abstract

Abstract
