Abstract

Abstract

"Universalism has always shown two faces to the world: one emancipatory and inclusionary, the other repressive and exclusionary. Jewish experience of universalism has been correspondingly equivocal. Antisemitism and the left provides an original and stimulating study of modern antisemitism, tracing the intellectual and political struggles between these two opposed perspectives. At times, universalism has acted as a stimulus for Jewish emancipation, for civil, political and social inclusion. But it has also been used to justify hatred of Jews, depicting them as hostile to the entire human race, in ways even more sinister than those found in pre-modern and largely Christian traditions of anti-Judaism. A key feature of this repressive and exclusionary universalism and the distinctly modern form of antisemitism it has generated has been the construction of a putative 'Jewish question', which somehow needs to be 'solved'. This book provides conceptual analysis of the struggles waged within the Enlightenment, Marxism, critical Jewish thought and the contemporary left, engaging with such key authors as Mendelssohn, Marx, Adorno and Horkheimer, Arendt and Habermas, to critique the very notion of the 'Jewish question' and rescue universalism from the antisemitic morass into which it has too often fallen. Antisemitism and the left will appeal to students, lecturers and the general reader interested in antisemitism and/or in principles of universalism, spanning the fields of politics, sociology, history, philosophy and Jewish studies. Abstract

Abstract

"This volume concerns the ways in which verbal and non-verbal actions are combined and linked in a range of contexts in everyday conversation, in institutional contexts, and in written journalism. The volume includes an introduction which, besides presenting the content of the articles, discusses terminological fundamentals such as the understanding of the terms “clause”, “action” and “linkage” and “combining” in different grammatical traditions and the ways they are conceived of here, as well as open questions collectively formulated by the contributors in planning for the volume concerning the recognition, emergence and distance of linkage, and the ways these questions are addressed in the contributions to the volume. Topics treated in the articles include combining physical actions and verbal announcements in everyday conversation, linking of verbal and nonverbal actions as well as verbal linkages between nonverbal actions by dance teachers building pedagogical activity. Other topics concern the mediation of questions through informal translating in multilingual conversation in order to organize participation, and the ways in which student requests for clarification and confirmation create learning occasions in a foreign language classroom. Still other articles concern the on-line emergence of alternative questions with the Finnish particle vai ’or’, delayed completions of unfinished turns, the transforming of requests and offers into joint ventures, and the ways in which direct quotations are created in written journalism from the original talk in the spoken interview. Most of the papers employ Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics as a theoretical framework. The languages used as data are Finnish, English, Estonian, French, Brazilian Portuguese and Swedish. "

Abstract

Gottfried Niedhart analyzes the key role played by West Germany in the process of dètente in Europe, which was understood by the West German political coalitions in power during this period as a means of transcending the status quo. At the same time, he explains the policies of the Warsaw Pact, whose members, unlike West Germany, saw dètente as a means of preserving the status quo.

Abstract

Published for the first time, Khrushchev`s secret conversations, consultations, and notes during the early phase of the Berlin Crisis that he initiated show us a politician filled with strong emotions who aimed at the domination of West Berlin and the ruin of NATO, thereby openly challenging the Western powers. However, he was not ultimately prepared to risk the nuclear war he had threatened.

Abstract

"For a long time, the use of the term «Social Question» was referred to as being a phenomenon of the 19th century, related to the social changes taking place during that period. Today, however, the so-called Social Question is increasingly linked to current societal challenges, such as global migration, radical demographic change, or increased social divisions in both public and professional debates. In the light of the above, the present volume approaches the complexity of social issues and social work, whereby contributions with a historical, theoretical, phenomenological or political focus stand side by side, in both complementary or contradictory ways. The main purpose is to create references to actuality and to identify potentials for development which should help to deal with the historical meaning of the Social Question as well as to recontextualize the latter in our time."

Abstract

Published for the first time, Khrushchev`s secret conversations, consultations, and notes document his attitude toward the West. A key issue in the period under consideration was the fate of East Germany. Other important issues include the disarmament overtures made toward the US/NATO, efforts to form an anti-imperialist front with the nations of the Third World, and Khrushchev`s support for anti-colonialist forces.

Abstract

From the conflict in Syria to the crisis in Ukraine, Russia continues to dominate the headlines. Yet the political realities of contemporary Russia are poorly understood by Western observers and policy-makers. Andrew Monaghan explains the importance of 'getting Russia right'. Exploring in detail the relationship between the West and Russia, he charts the development of relations and investigates the causes of the increasingly obvious sense of strategic dissonance. He also considers the evolution in Russian domestic politics, introducing influential current figures and those who are forming the leadership and opposition of the future. By delving into the depths of difficult questions such as the causes of the Ukraine crisis or the political protests surrounding the 2011–12 elections, the book offers a dynamic model for understanding this most fascinating and elusive of countries.

Abstract

re complex as two parallel nationalist movements – one seeking higher Yugoslav unity, the other arguing for the separate political autonomy of ethnic groups – often complemented one another, but at other times were in open conflict. Moreover, the political and territorial ambitions entailed by the various ethnic nationalisms often collided with each other. Eventually, as elsewhere, a marriage of necessity brought the two together. Yugoslav communists had to acknowledge that nationalism was a potent political force. They thus continued searching for a political project that could successfully combine both social and national emancipation in the context of developed and often mutually exclusive national projects of neighbouring groups. In this chapter, I show how the Yugoslav communists ‘discovered’ the successful federalist formula for the socialist re unification of Yugoslavia after the Second World War as well as how, as with any ‘successful’ formula, its discovery was preceded by numerous fruitless experiments.
