Abstract

This interdisciplinary book contains 22 essays and interventions on rest and restlessness, silence and noise, relaxation and work. It draws together approaches from artists, literary scholars, psychologists, activists, historians, geographers and sociologists who challenge assumptions about how rest operates across mind, bodies, and practices. Rest’s presence or absence affects everyone. Nevertheless, defining rest is problematic: both its meaning and what it feels like are affected by many socio-political, economic and cultural factors. The authors open up unexplored corners and experimental pathways into this complex topic, with contributions ranging from investigations of daydreaming and mindwandering, through histories of therapeutic relaxation and laziness, and creative-critical pieces on lullabies and the Sabbath, to experimental methods to measure aircraft noise and track somatic vigilance in urban space. The essays are grouped by scale of enquiry, into mind, body and practice, allowing readers to draw new connections across apparently distinct phenomena.The book will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines in the social sciences, life sciences, arts and humanities.

Abstract

Within this work a material law was developed which correctly describes the creep and relaxation characteristics of young and mature normal strength and high-strength concretes. It is based on an aging thermodynamically sound rheological model and considers the complex nonlinear creep behavior under constant and variable stresses. In case of relaxation the corresponding integral relation is solved by means of a numerical algorithm.

Abstract

While the present state of knowledge on the time dependent deformation behaviour of normal and high-strength concrete may be considered as sufficiently determined, the creep and shrinkage of lightweight aggregate (LWA) concrete, particularly of high-strength LWA concrete, can only be specified inadequately. On the basis of the experimental results a prediction model for shrinkage and creep of structural lightweight aggregate concrete was developed.

Abstract

Magnetic Resonance finds applications, from spectroscopy to imaging, on a routine basis in the majority of research and medical institutions. It is also becoming more frequently used for specific applications in which the whole instrument and system is designed for optimum operation. Magnetic Resonance sensors have been applied to fields as varied as petro-chemistry - with borehole logging, food engineering - with online process monitoring, emergency medicine - with point of care diagnostics and civil engineering - with sensors for monitoring cement drying. This great diversity is seeing exciting developments in magnetic resonance sensing technology published in application specific journals where they are often not seen by the wider sensor community.

Abstract

A high resolution electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study on anode supported single cells (ASC) is presented. The cells were characterised over a broad range of operating conditions, including different temperatures, current densities and various cathode and anode gas compositions.The analysis of the distribution of relaxation times combined with the numeric accuracy of a CNLS fit enabled the identification of five different processes contributing to the total polarisation loss of an ASC.

Please describe the book in straightforward and consumer-friendly terms.[Selective and quantitative detection of different kinds of biocomponents plays an important role in biomedical applications, clinical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, toxicology, regenerative medicine and drug delivery. Therefore, multidisciplinary area of magnetic biosensing have been extensively developed in recent years, aiming to create compact analytical devices for non-expensive and low time consuming analysis provided at the point of care by non-skilled personnel. Biological samples exhibit very low magnetic background, and thus highly sensitive measurements of magnetic labels or magnetic nanoparticles enriched units can be performed without further processing. A magnetic biosensor is a compact analytical device in which magnetic transducer converts a magnetic field variation into a change of frequency, current, voltage, etc. Different types of magnetic effects are capable of creating magnetic biosensors with extra high sensitivity. This book describes interesting examples of magnetic materials based biosensors, including the synthesis of model materials for biosensor development, new engineering solutions and theoretical contributions on the magnetic biosensor sensitivity. Book contains 13 research works representing international multidisciplinary teams from Austria, China, Germany, Greece, Iran, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Taiwan and United States of America. Conventional MRI has several limitations such as long scan durations, motion artifacts, very loud acoustic noise, signal loss due to short relaxation times, and RF induced heating of electrically conducting objects. The goals of this work are to evaluate and improve the state-of-the-art methods for MRI of tissue with short T?, to prove the feasibility of in vivo Concurrent Excitation and Acquisition, and to introduce simultaneous electroglottography measurement during functional lung MRI.

Abstract

In this book, a new procedure to analyze lithium-ion cells is introduced. The cells are disassembled to analyze their components in experimental cell housings. Then, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, time domain measurements and the Distribution function of Relaxation Times are applied to obtain a deep understanding of the relevant loss processes. This procedure yields a notable surplus of information about the electrode contributions to the overall internal resistance of the cell.

Abstract

This Special Issue of Crystals contains papers focusing on various properties of conducting ceramics. Multiple aspects of both the research and application of this group of materials have been addressed. Conducting ceramics are the wide group of mostly oxide materials which play crucial roles in various technical applications, especially in the context of the harvesting and storage of energy. Without ion-conducting oxides, such as yttria-stabilized zirconia, doped ceria devices such as solid oxide fuel cells would not exist, not to mention the wide group of other ion conductors which can be applied in batteries or even electrolyzers, besides fuel cells. The works published in this Special Issue tackle experimental results as well as general theoretical trends in the field of ceramic conductors, or electroceramics, as it is often referred to.
