Abstract

The ‘blockchain’ is the core mechanism for the Bitcoin digital payment system. It embraces a set of inter-related technologies: the blockchain itself as a distributed record of digital events, the distributed consensus method to agree whether a new block is legitimate, automated smart contracts, and the data structure associated with each block. We propose a permanent distributed record of intellectual effort and associated reputational reward, based on the blockchain that instantiates and democratises educational reputation beyond the academic community. We are undertaking initial trials of a private blockchain or storing educational records, drawing also on our previous research into reputation management for educational systems.

Abstract

This book presents a variety of different themes related to risks and risk management. The book consists of research papers aimed at supplementing and updating the topics discussed previously in risk management literature. Abstract

Kann die Europäische Zentralbank die hohe Reputation der Deutschen Bundesbank übernehmen? Für die Analyse dieser Frage wird das Grundmodell von Barro und Gordon dahingehend erweitert, daß Reputation auch dann aufgebaut werden kann, wenn die Antiinflationspolitik unglaubwürdig erscheint. Hierbei treten nun allerdings reale Kosten auf, die von der erwarteten und von der gesellschaftlich präferierten Inflationsrate abhängen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird der Erfolg der Bundesbank nicht nur auf deren Unabhängigkeit, sonden auch auf die Stabilitätskultur in Deutschland zurückgeführt. Die Europäische Zentralbank wird sich dagegen heterogenen Stabilitätsauffassungen gegenübersehen. Es wird gezeigt, daß externe Anreize eine Antiinflationspolitik sicherstellen können.

Abstract

Le second ouvrage de la collection “l'Univers des Vignerons” consacré à la commune de Saint-Emilion est l'œuvre de deux géographes et d'une sociologue. À l'évidence il ne s'agit pas d'un nouveau livre sur les vignobles et les vins de ce bourg dont la réputation mondiale n'est plus à faire. Il s'agit plutôt de trois études sur des points particuliers peu étudiés jusqu'à présent. L'analyse approfondie du cadastre de 1847 restitue l'état rural et social de la commune au milieu du xixe siècle, point de départ d'une autre étude sur l'activité des vignerons dans la défense de leur cru (avec en particulier un intérêt tout spécial porté à l'histoire du syndicat viticole, la naissance de la notion de “château”, la création de la cave coopérative et des classements...). Mais à cette intense action des viticulteurs répondait une aussi intense activité associative dont témoigne le grand nombre de groupes divers, culturels, sportifs ou autres...

Auch die Vernachlässigung der Vollständigkeit eines Verweises auf den Urheber einer als grundlegend wahrgenommenen Idee stellt eine – wenn nicht gar die intensivste – Form der Anerkennung dar. Julia Richter ermittelt, mit welchen Strategien wissenschaftliches Prestige erzeugt wird. Im Zentrum ihrer Analyse stehen die Verweise auf Ferdinand de Saussure im Diskurs der romanistischen Linguistik. Die Studie entwickelt sogleich eine diskursanalytische Methode, die geeignet ist, Verweise in wissenschaftlichen Texten auf ihr Potential hin zu untersuchen, bestimmte Akteure des Diskurses aufzuzeigen und die Beziehungen zwischen diesen Diskursakteuren darzustellen.

Abstract

This book collected studies focused on the management of tourist destinations. Destinations are complex and adaptive systems, where the different elements that make them up have to be oriented towards achieving a common objective that improves the competitiveness of the destination. Five main lines of research on tourist destinations can be established: 1) the management, planning, and marketing of destinations, with special attention to the tourism supply chain, communication, and integral management; 2) the sustainability of resources and capabilities; 3) the renewal of destinations in order to update their offer and main resources to maintain competitiveness; 4) online reputation and communication through social media in order to create and enhance a strong brand image and customer loyalty; and 5) the application of new technologies in order to develop smart destinations. The book is made up of five research studies that focus on analyzing the transition towards a more circular tourist activity in hotels, image as a competitive factor of destinations, the value of cultural creativity, the coherence of online reputation, and the relationship between hotel prices and online reputation in different tourist destinations.

Abstract

Interest in politics and the political process—topics that economists consider to be the purview of the sub-field of study known as public choice—appears to be as high as ever. This Special Issue aims to provide a collection of high-quality studies covering many of the varied topics traditionally investigated in the growing field of public choice economics. These include expressive and instrumental voting, checks and balances in the enforcement of rules, electoral disproportionality, foreign aid and political freedom, voting cycles, (in)stability of political ideology, federal spending on environmental goods, pork-barrel and general appropriations spending, politics and taxpayer funding for professional sports arenas, and political scandal and “friends-and-neighbors” voting in general elections. In bringing these topics together in one place, this Special Issue offers a mix of conceptual/formal and empirical studies in public choice economics.
