Abstract

The man of blue landscapes describes the life and work of the Finnish geographer Johannes Gabriel Granö (1882–1956), whose career also reflected Finland’s development as a modern state. Granö was a scientific explorer, writer, a pioneer of Finnish photographic art and a professor of geography at the universities of Tartu (Estonia), Helsinki and Turku. In Estonia he applied scientific method to the study of local history and from Tartu brought the tradition of urban research. Granö spent much of his youth in Omsk in western Siberia, where his father worked as a priest among displaced and deported Finns and Estonians. From 1906 to 1916 Granö made an expedition to Mongolia and the Altai mountains, but his fieldwork remained unfinished when the 1917 revolution broke out, the area was then closed to Western scholars for 70 years. Among Granö’s most important works are the classic travel book Altai, vaellusvuosina nähtyä ja elettyä (‘The Altai, seen and experienced during my years of travel’, 1921) and his methodological masterpiece Puhdas maantiede (‘Pure geography’, 1930). In it Granö outlined a theory of landscapes, and the book was a pioneering work ahead of its time: landscape was examined in terms of the relation between human beings and their environment, as the sum of all the senses.

Abstract

The Representation of Science and Scientists on Postage Stamps examines how the postal authorities of the world have developed unique techniques to portray science and scientists in order to convey a message behind the stamp issue. It is a multi-disciplinary examination that investigates visual representation, semiotics, science, science history and politics, amongst other issues. The author introduces and describes a technique for looking at how and why images may have been chosen. Is the image a mirror reflecting a known reality or is it a lens to challenge, to prompt further thought or action? He also hypothesises that the Internet created a real change to science communication, influencing the way images of science were used. The stamp message changed from that of pursuing a public understanding approach to an awareness of science with its increasing contextual content.

Abstract

The date of May 13, 2011 marked the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of today's main building of the University of Hamburg on Edmund-Siemers-Allee. On the same day, the program begun in 1999 to name its seven lecture halls after outstanding scholars expelled during the Nazi era was completed. This book is therefore being published on these two occasions. In addition to an introduction to the multifaceted history of the building, the volume collects portraits of the seven namesakes of the lecture halls: biographical and werkanalytische approaches to the philosopher Ernst Cassirer, the art historian Erwin Panofsky, the German scholar Agathe Lasch, the mathematician Emil Artin, the lawyer Magdalene Schoch, the international law expert and peace researcher Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the social economist Eduard Heimann. Together with the "Stolpersteinen" (Stumbling Stones), which were laid in front of the domed building in 2010, the auditorium appointments form an ensemble through which the main building represents the University of Hamburg in a special way as a central place of remembrance.

Abstract

"Scientists deserve public recognition. The ways that they are depicted, however, are severely limited in physical and personal traits, helping to establish and enhance stereotypes under the general title of ‘scientist’. These stereotypes range from the arrogant researcher who wants to rule the world, to the lab coat wearing ‘nerdy’ genius, but all generally fall to an extreme view of an existing perception of what a scientist should look and be like. For example, the popular image of ‘a scientist’ overlooks the presence of women almost entirely unless attributed to specific subjects and/or with narrow character depictions. The implications can be far-reaching. Young people, being heavily swayed by what they see and hear in the media, may avoid scientific careers because of these limited or unflattering portrayals of the scientific community, regardless of whether they reflect real life. Based on findings from the Light’13 project, this book examines such stereotypes and questions whether it is possible to adjust people’s perception of scientists and to increase interest in science and scientific careers through a series of specific actions and events."

Abstract

This open access book examines key aspects of international cooperation to enhance nuclear safety, security, safeguards, and non-proliferation, thereby assisting in development and maintenance of the verification regime and fostering progress toward a nuclear weapon-free world. The book opens by addressing important political, institutional, and legal dimensions. Current challenges are discussed and attempts made to identify possible solutions and future improvements. Subsequent sections consider scientific developments that have the potential to increase the effectiveness of implementation of international regimes, particularly in critical areas, technology foresight, and the ongoing evaluation of current capabilities. The closing sections examine scientific and technical challenges and discuss the role of international cooperation and actions of the scientific community in leading the world toward peace and security. The book – which celebrates 60 years of IAEA Atoms for Peace and Development and the EURATOM Treaty – comprises contributions presented at the XX Edoardo Amaldi Conference, where eminent scientists, diplomats, and policymakers were able to compare national perspectives and update international collaborations.

Abstract

During the Cold War, the systemic rivalry between East and West was also carried out in the field of scholarship. This volume examines the Academies of Sciences in Central Europe on either side of the Iron Curtain in the early stages of the Cold War (and in some cases beyond). These include academies in the Socialist states (the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Romanian People’s Republic Academy, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences, and the Slovakian Academy of Sciences), academies in divided Germany (the German Academy of Sciences at Berlin [Academy of Sciences of the GDR], the Saxon Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and finally the Leopoldina in Halle/Saale as the all-German Academy of Sciences), and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.Der vorliegende Band ermöglicht erstmals einen vergleichenden Blick auf Akademien der Wissenschaften in Zentraleuropa im Kalten Krieg.Im Kalten Krieg wurde die Systemkonkurrenz zwischen Ost und West auch im Feld der Wissenschaften ausgetragen. Der Band thematisiert Akademien der Wissenschaften in Zentraleuropa diesseits und jenseits des Eisernen Vorhangs in der Zeit des frühen Kalten Krieges (und fallweise darüber hinaus). Vertreten sind Akademien in den sozialistischen Staaten (die Slowenische Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste, die Akademie der Volksrepublik Rumänien, die Ungarische Akademie der Wissenschaften, die Polnische Akademie der Wissenschaften, die Tschechoslowakische Akademie der Wissenschaften und die Slowakische Akademie der Wissenschaften), Akademien der Wissenschaften im geteilten Deutschland (die Deutsche Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin [Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR], die Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften, die Akademie der Landwirtschaftswissenschaften der DDR, die Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, die Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften und schließlich die Leopoldina in Halle/Saale als gesamtdeutsche Akademie der Naturforscher) sowie die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften.Die übergreifende Fragestellung richtet sich zum einen auf Kontinuitäten und Zäsuren innerhalb der Akademien, zum anderen auf Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen ‚westlichem‘ und sozialistischem Akademiemodell, aber auch innerhalb des jeweiligen politischen Systems. Ausgangspunkt des Vergleichs ist das Maß an Eigenständigkeit und Unabhängigkeit, dass den Wissenschaftsakademien von Staat und Politik jeweils zugestanden wird.In einem einleitenden Kapitel werden die grundsätzlichen Unterschiede zwischen Akademien ,westlichen‘ und sozialistischen Typs aufgezeigt und analysiert. Eine markante Differenz zeigt sich bereits in zwei zentralen Aspekten: Während die ‚westlichen‘ Akademien – trotz Involvierung in den Nationalsozialismus – nach 1945 weitgehend bruchlos weitergeführt wurden, erfolgte in den sozialistischen Staaten eine Neugründung der Wissenschaftsakademien. Die Akademien sozialistischen Typs wurden bald zu groß angelegten Forschungsträgern ausgebaut, während die ,westlichen‘ Akademien reine Gelehrtengesellschaften blieben. Eine Zwischenposition zwischen diesen beiden Modellen nimmt die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW) ein.Die Einleitung der Herausgeber und der Beitrag von Mitchell Ash bilden einen fundierten Rahmen für die insgesamt 15 Beiträge namhafter Wissenschaftshistorikerinnen. Eine Schlussbetrachtung von Herbert Matis und Arnold Suppan verortet die Einzelbeiträge vor dem Hintergrund der politischen Transformationen in Zentraleuropa im Kalten Krieg.
