Abstract

Im Rahmen des BMBF-Verbundprojekts MikroFEMOS wurde eine Fertigungs-Infrastruktur für einen mikrooptischen Abstandssensor entwickelt, die einen deutlichen Schritt nach vorn in Richtung ""Small Equipment for small Parts"" darstellt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird dieses System vorgestellt und es werden die erforderlichen Prozesse zur Herstellung des hybrid aufgebauten Sensors beschrieben.

Abstract

The main objectives of this book are (i) to investigate the electrochemical behavior and the analytical performance of a novel ultramicroelectrode array (UMEA); (ii) to assess the analytical parameters of square-wave anodic stripping voltammetric measurements (SWASV) using the UMEA; and (iii) to estimate the potential of the UMEA in developing decentralised analytical equipments for the determination of trace concentrations of heavy metals in natural waters. Surface analytical techniques (SEM, ESEM, and AFM) showed that the UMEA chips are of high quality in manufacture. Cyclic voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments proved that the electrochemical behavior of the UMEA is dominated by the features characteristic for single microelectrodes.Chronocoulometry was found to be the most suitable method in generating the Hg-film of good quality. A new UMEA chip could be plated at least ten times, corresponding to about 500 measurements of trace metals in synthetic aqueous solutions. Using SWASV, detection limits of <0.1 ï¿g/l could be achieved for the metals (Pb, Cd). Precision and accuracy were found to be approx +/-10% of RSD.In natural waters, the results obtained with the UMEA sensor showed a reasonably good agreement with HR-ICP-MS analyses. Different experimental parameters were optimised and investigated. Interferences (e.g., DOC) were significantly reduced through medium exchange and standard addition. Ultrasonic bath proved to be very efficient in resurfacing electrodes in laboratory.The UMEA sensor shows a great potential in developing a portable trace metal analyzer. However, for in situ and on-site measurements, the protection of the UMEA sensor from fouling seems to be inevitable. In order to achieve a pure microelectrode behavior with the UMEA, increasing the ratio of interelectrode distance to electrode diameter is recommended for further developments.

Abstract

In optically powered networks, both, communication signals and power for remotely located sensor nodes, are transmitted over an optical fiber. Key features of optically powered networks are node operation without local power supplies or batteries as well as operation with negligible susceptibility to electro-magnetic interference and to lightning. In this book, different kinds of optically powered devices and networks are investigated, and selected applications are demonstrated.

Abstract

In this work, a new measurement approach for a radar-based high accuracy distance measurement with guided wave propagation is presented. The reached distance accuracy is in the single-digit range. The main influencing factors on the achievable accuracy are characterized with the developed methods and techniques, to allow a systematic design and optimization of the system in advance.

Abstract

The field of optomechatronics provides synergistic effects of optics, mechanics and electronics for efficient sensor development. Optical sensors for the measurement of mechanical quantities, equipped with appropriate electronic signal (pre)processing means have a wide range of applications, from surface testing, stress monitoring, thin film analysis to biochemical sensing. The aim of this special issue is to provide an overview of actual research and innovative applications of optomechatronics in sensors. Abstract

In this thesis two probabilistic model-based estimators are introduced that allow the reconstruction and identification of space-time continuous physical systems. The Sliced Gaussian Mixture Filter (SGMF) exploits linear substructures in mixed linear/nonlinear systems, and thus is well-suited for identifying various model parameters. The Covariance Bounds Filter (CBF) allows the efficient estimation of widely distributed systems in a decentralized fashion.

Abstract

Einwandige Kohlenstoffnanoröhren (SWCNTs) gelten aufgrund ihrer hohen Ladungsträgermobilität, des hohen Oberfläche-Volumen-Verhältnisses und der Tatsache, dass all ihre Atome mit der Umgebung wechselwirken, als hoch interessant für die Sensorik. Hier wird ein neues Konzept für die Messung des pH-Wertes, der als wichtigster Parameter der Flüssiganalytik gilt, auf Basis von SWCNTs vorgestellt und anhand der Charakterisierung der hergestellten Sensoren die Funktionsfähigkeit nachgewiesen.

Please describe the book in straightforward and consumer-friendly terms.[Recent advances in sensing technologies, especially those for Microsensor Integrated Systems, have led to several new commercial applications. Among these, low voltage and low power circuit architectures have gained growing attention, being suitable for portable long battery life devices. The aim is to improve the performances of actual interface circuits and systems, both in terms of voltage mode and current mode, in order to overcome the potential problems due to technology scaling and different technology integrations. Related problems, especially those concerning parasitics, lead to a severe interface design attention, especially concerning the analog front-end and novel and smart architecture must be explored and tested, both at simulation and prototype level. Moreover, the growing demand for autonomous systems gets even harder the interface design due to the need of energy-aware cost-effective circuit interfaces integrating, where possible, energy harvesting solutions. Abstract

Photon-counting image sensors represent a possible paradigm shift in solid-state image sensors. In these devices, photons are individually sensed and counted. To count photons, the devices must have high quantum efficiency, deep sub-electron read noise and the ability to read-out in digital form at high speed. This all-invited content from the top image sensor researchers around the world, reviews the state of the art of photon-counting image sensors in a variety of configurations, including CMOS image sensors and devices using avalanche multiplication, and for visible photons as well as higher energy photons such as ultraviolet and x-rays. New methods of creating image information from photon-counting image sensors is also described. This new emerging technology will have applications in low-light scientific imaging for aerospace and defense, and in the life sciences. It may also have applications in cryptography, communications, security cameras, 3D imaging and photography.
