Abstract

This volume provides the first ever large-scale comparative treatment of there sentences (there copula NP), reporting the results of a survey of Italo-Romance and Sardinian dialects of Italy. The volume comprises detailed discussions of focus structure, predication and argument realization, the definiteness effects, and the linking from semantics to syntax in there sentences, advancing novel proposals in each case. The testing of influential hypotheses on existential constructions against first-hand dialect evidence leads the book to argue that existential and locative there sentences differ in focus structure and semantics, although their not being predicate focus constructions and the non-canonicality of the predicate—which is typically referential—is reflected in their shared morphosyntactic features. The hypothesis that the pivot is the predicate of the existential construction is adopted in the analysis, although a distinction is drawn between referential and non-referential pivots, which explains variation in pivot behaviour in morphosyntax. The volume also provides the historical background of Romance there sentences, relying on the findings of the analysis of a substantial corpus of early Italo-Romance vernacular texts.

Abstract

This volume presents a sampling of papers devoted to different phenomena of Polish (and theoretical) morphology and syntax. The focus of attention of the Authors of the present volume is concentrated mostly on questions of syntactic and morphological analysis of Modern Standard Polish with exception of W. Mańczak's and (in part) G. Hentschel's articles, which take the diachronic perspective.

Abstract

Questions are communicatively on an equal footing with statements. However, while the greatest number of syntactic studies deal with formal and functional aspects of declarative sentences, so far only a handful of Slavic works have been devoted to the structural features of interrogative sentences in Slavic languages. The present work shows that - contrary to the first impression - there are many relevant subtle differences in the syntax and use of supplementary questions in Slavic languages, which have to be integrated into a theory of questioning. For reviewing generalizations that v. a. Developed in formal syntax descriptions, the author uses data from extensive corpora and individual interviews as well as collected acceptability judgments from controlled experimental studies. Specifically, the work deals with Russian, Polish and Czech with the position of question expressions in simple supplementary questions, the possibilities of sentence entanglement and the syntax of questions with multiple question expressions. In addition to the surface form, the contextual and communicative function of the structure types is also taken into account.

Abstract

This book focuses on seven of the most important formal methods used to interpret the New Testament today. Several of the chapters also touch on Old Testament/Hebrew Bible interpretation. In line with the multiplicity of methods for interpretation of texts in the humanities in general, New Testament study has never before seen so many different methods. This situation poses both opportunities and challenges for scholars and students alike. The articles in this book introduce the latest methods and give examples of these methods at work. The seven methods are as follows: post-colonial, narrative, historical, performance, mathematical analysis of style; womanist; and ecological.
