Abstract

Sexual dysfunctions have a high prevalence in males and females, and an increase in research into its backgrounds, causes and treatment is clearly visible. Characterization of sexual dysfunctions is complex and often needs extensive clinical, psychological and psychiatric expertise to arrive at reliable diagnoses. The present volume illustrates various aspects involved in sexual (dys)functioning but also the complexity of the field. Premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, female interest/arousal disorder, hypogonadism, sexual side effects of antidepressants and circumcision are subject of the various contributions. The topics treated nicely illustrate the problems associated with sexual function and dysfunction, including lifestyle, biological, mental, sociocultural and religious aspects. The topics in this volume clearly demonstrate the importance of research on sexual functions and dysfunctions.

Abstract

This volume tells the story of the case study genre at a time when it became the genre par excellence for discussing human sexuality across the humanities and the life sciences. A History of the Case Study takes the reader on a transcontinental journey from the imperial world of fin-de-siècle Central Europe to the interwar metropolises of Weimar Germany, and to the United States of America in the post-war years. Foregrounding the figures of case study pioneers, and highlighting their radical engagements with the genre, the work scrutinises the case writing practices of Sigmund Freud and his predecessor sexologist Richard von Krafft-Ebing; writers such as Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and Weimar intellectuals such as Erich Wulffen. There result new insights into the continuing legacy of such writers, and into the agency increasingly claimed by the readerships that emerged with the development of modernity—from readers who self-identified as masochists, to conmen and female criminals.

Abstract

Midwives support women during the reproductive period of their lives. Dimensions of midwifery work include, in addition to the physiological aspect, psychological and spiritual issues. Midwifery activities mean involvement in the most intimate sphere of clients' lives. Women's perceptions of partnership, sexuality, pregnancy and birth are affected by their personal experiences and by the culture they live in. The same factors also influence the midwives' perception of these issues. It is therefore crucial for the midwives to be aware of certain areas of their work that have a sexual inclination and clarify their own eventual prejudices regarding sexuality, since these can affect their provision of holistic, individual and competent care to women and their families. This book deals with different aspects of sexuality that can have an influence on everyday midwifery work. It might also be of interest to different groups of people - midwives in clinical settings, midwifery educators, midwifery students and also other health professionals who manage women during the reproductive period.

Abstract

"Same-sex love was forbidden by law until 1944, and in culture it continued to be taboo, but it has always existed there. The prohibition created tensions which art and literature could play with. Narratives about forbidden love show this through well-known authors such as Agnes von Krusenstjerna, Maria Sandel, Karin Boye and Frida Stéenhoff, and less well-known ones like Gertrud Almqvist, Margareta Suber, Lydia Wahlström and the pseudonym Elsa Gille. The book investigates literary narratives about women’s love for women and the ideas about the forbidden contained in them. What strategies did the authors use to get round the ban on the mention of the topic? Are there any utopian visions of how everything could be arranged in a different and better way? And how does the literature relate to other theories about same-sex love? Berättelser om det förbjudna: Begär mellan kvinnor i svensk litteratur 1900–1935 (“Stories of the Forbidden: Desire between Women in Swedish Literature 1900–1935”) is a free-standing continuation of Kärlekshistoria: Begär mellan kvinnor i 1800-talets litteratur (“Love Story: Desire between Women in Nineteenth-century Literature”, 2008). Together the books span over 100 years of Swedish literary history, making them the most comprehensive study available in the field in Sweden and Scandinavia.
