Abstract

The biochemical models describing complex and dynamic metabolic systems are typically multi-parametric and non-linear, thus the identification of their parameters requires nonlinear&#xD;regression analysis of the experimental data. The stochastic nature of the experimental&#xD;samples poses the necessity to estimate not only the values fitting best to the model, but also&#xD;the distribution of the parameters, and to test statistical hypotheses about the values of these&#xD;parameters. In such situations the application of analytical models for parameter&#xD;distributions is totally inappropriate because their assumptions are not applicable for&#xD;intrinsically non-linear regressions. That is why, Monte Carlo simulations are a powerful&#xD;tool to model biochemical processes.

Abstract

Geschäftsprozess- und Ressourcenmodelle können bislang nur eingeschränkt zur Untersuchung des Ressourceneinsatzes genutzt werden, da relevante Eigenschaften nicht adäquat abgebildet werden. Aus diesem Grund wird in dieser Arbeit die Resource Modeling Language (RML) konzipiert und durch Ressourcen-Netze in die Geschäftsprozessmodellierung integriert. Zur Modellierung und Analyse wird das Werkzeug RAvEN konzipiert. Die Analyse des Ressourceneinsatzes erfolgt durch Simulationsexperimente.

Abstract

The work addresses communication networks established over radio equipped vehicles in our everyday road traffic, so called Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), and discusses their impact on two major goals, namely traffic safety and traffic efficiency. For both objectives, the thesis proposes an appropriate modeling of the essential building blocks Traffic, Communication and Application and enables impact assessment studies by means of implemented simulation tools.

Abstract

Die gekoppelte Simulation ist eine Möglichkeit, mechatronische Systeme in der Simulation abzubilden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die gekoppelte Simulation unter Matlab/Simulink beschrieben und eine Möglichkeit aufgezeigt, das Kommunikationsintervall bei der gekoppelten Simulation unter Berücksichtigung der beteiligten Teilsysteme zu bestimmen. Die erarbeitete Handlungsvorschrift wird an Beispielen aus dem Bereich der mobilen Arbeitsmaschinen verifiziert.

Abstract

Crystals are indispensable in technology, nature, and our daily lives. For example, cooking uses many kinds of crystallized products, such as salt, sugar, and fat crystals; electronic devices contain semiconductor crystals; living organisms produce mineral crystals to maintain biological processes; and snow and ice crystals play a crucial role in climate change. For these and other topics related to crystals, an especially important area of research is crystal growth. Computer simulations of crystal growth have become increasingly important as a result of rapid increases in available computing power. Computer simulations can analyze and predict various aspects of crystal growth, including molecular-scale growth and nucleation mechanisms, the structure and dynamics of surfaces and interfaces, and pattern formation. This book presents state-of-the-art research and reviews of computer simulation studies on crystal growth for hard-sphere particles, organic molecules, ice, and functional materials. The studies use a variety of simulation methodologies, including molecular simulations, first-principles simulations, continuum simulations, and multiscale simulations. This book will interest graduate students and researchers in crystal growth science and technology and will provide a helpful reference for scientists who want to familiarize themselves with computer simulations of crystal growth.

Abstract

This work presents methods to advance electrophysiological simulations of intracardiac electrograms (IEGM). An experimental setup is introduced, which combines electrical measurements of extracellular potentials with a method for optical acquisition of the transmembrane voltage in-vitro. Thereby, intracardiac electrograms can be recorded under defined conditions. Using experimental and clinical signals, detailed simulations of IEGMs are parametrized, which can support clinical diagnosis.

Abstract

Although computer networks are inherently parallel systems, the parallel execution of network simulations on interconnected processors frequently yields only limited benefits. In this thesis, methods are proposed to estimate and understand the parallelization potential of network simulations. Further, mechanisms and architectures for exploiting the massively parallel processing resources of modern graphics cards to accelerate network simulations are proposed and evaluated.

Abstract

A multiscale simulation model is developed by combining the CFD Simulation and the population balance equations to describe a transient process of fluidized bed spray granulation. In this model, the CFD simulation generates the particle growth and nucleation rates in consideration of fluid dynamics, drying and multiple interactions, such as drops deposition, dust integration and nucleation between different particles (drops, dust and granules).

Abstract

The book serves both as a reference for various scaled models with corresponding dimensionless numbers, and as a resource for learning the art of scaling. A special feature of the book is the emphasis on how to create software for scaled models, based on existing software for unscaled models.Scaling (or non-dimensionalization) is a mathematical technique that greatly simplifies the setting of input parameters in numerical simulations. Moreover, scaling enhances the understanding of how different physical processes interact in a differential equation model. Compared to the existing literature, where the topic of scaling is frequently encountered, but very often in only a brief and shallow setting, the present book gives much more thorough explanations of how to reason about finding the right scales. This process is highly problem dependent, and therefore the book features a lot of worked examples, from very simple ODEs to systems of PDEs, especially from fluid mechanics.The text is easily accessible and example-driven. The first part on ODEs fits even a lower undergraduate level, while the most advanced multiphysics fluid mechanics examples target the graduate level. The scientific literature is full of scaled models, but in most of the cases, the scales are just stated without thorough mathematical reasoning. This book explains how the scales are found mathematically.This book will be a valuable read for anyone doing numerical simulations based on ordinary or partial differential equations.
