Abstract

Participation has become fashionable again, but at the same time it has always played a crucial role in our contemporary societies, and it has been omnipresent in a surprisingly large number of societal fields. In the case of the media sphere, the present-day media conjuncture is now considered to be the most participatory ever, but media participation has had a long and intense history. To deal with these paradoxes, this book looks at participation as a structurally unstable concept and as the object of a political-ideological struggle that makes it oscillate between minimalist and maximalist versions. This struggle is analysed in theoretical reflections in five fields (democracy, arts, development, spatial planning and media) and in eight different cases of media practice. These case studies also show participation’s close connection to power, identity, organization, technology and quality.

Abstract

Many of the environmental and development policy problems discussed today have a global impact on people's well-being, while at the same time avoiding national control. Economic analyses describe the low incentives of each nation-state to contribute to the protection of global public goods and recommend cooperation at international level, where the rules for sustainable development need to be defined. International conferences such as the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 reflect this need, but are lagging behind many in terms of concrete measures. In view of the increasing globality and networking of the problems, the opposing initiative of Local Agenda 21, which suggests a solution in the local area, is surprising. The initiative, which was founded in 1992 and has since then been continued in communities all over the world, is a revolution of small steps that can meaningfully complement and support the effective global proclamations. At the local level, interests can be consolidated, innovative practices tested and snowball effects can be exploited for their dissemination and, in the long term, people's interest and awareness of sustainable development can be awakened. The book examines how local communities can play their role as a second important pillar in the implementation of sustainable development.

Abstract

The local dimension of development, even in a framework of global relationships and interconnections, appears as a topic of great interest for the territorial planning disciplines, opening new spaces above all in the reflection on the effectiveness of large area and supra-municipal level planning. The Val d’Agri Inter-communal Structural Plan was conceived as an experimental model of inter-municipal plan, as per DGR n. 1495 of 21/09/2010 of the Basilicata Region, for the development of which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the administrations of 23 municipalities.Reference for the entire activity of technical and scientific support to the Staff of the Basilicata Region were three academic institutions: the School of Engineering (SI) of the University of Basilicata, the Department of European and Mediterranean Cultures (DiCEM) of the University of Basilicata, the Urban and Spatial Planning Laboratory "Raffaele D'Ambrosio" (LUPT) of the Federico II University of NaplesAfter a first phase of the research work, concluded in 2014 and whose results are summarized in this volume, in 2018 the technical-scientific support activities have been resumed to allow the Region to define the eventual final products of the Inter-municipal Structural Plan of Val d'Agri.
