Abstract

The fact that Cavlacanti?s friend, Dante Alighieri, was a supremely fine poet ought not blind us to Cavalcanti?s own, rather different excellence. Both men were attracted to the dolce stil nuovo, the ?sweet new style? that emerged in thirteenth-century Florence. While Dante?s poetry was devoted to his childhood sweetheart, Beatrice, Cavalcanti?s poetry had more the tang of real-world experience: he struggled against unruly passions and sought instead to overcome love ? a source of torment and despair. It is chiefly through the translations of Rossetti and Pound that English-speaking readers have encountered Cavalcanti?s work. Pound?s famous translation, now viewed by some as antiquated, is remarkably different from the translation provided here in the graceful voice of poet David Slavitt. Working under the significant restraints of Cavalcanti?s elaborate formal structures, Slavitt renders an English translation faithful to the original poetry in both rhyme and rhythm.

Abstract

Ethics and Aesthetics of Translation engages with translation, in both theory and practice, as part of an interrogation of ethical as well as political thought in the work of three bilingual European authors: Bernardo Atxaga, Milan Kundera and Jorge Semprún. In approaching the work of these authors, the book draws upon the approaches to translation offered by Benjamin, Derrida, Ricœur and Deleuze to highlight a broad set of ethical questions, focused upon the limitations of the monolingual and the democratic possibilities of linguistic plurality; upon our innate desire to translate difference into similarity; and upon the ways in which translation responds to the challenges of individual and collective remembrance.
Each chapter explores these interlingual but also intercultural, interrelational and interdisciplinary issues, mapping a journey of translation that begins in the impact of translation upon the work of each author, continues into moments of linguistic translation, untranslatability and mistranslation within their texts and ultimately becomes an exploration of social, political and affective (un)translatability. In these journeys, the creative and critical potential of translation emerges as a potent, often violent, but always illuminating, vision of the possibilities of differentiation and connection, generation and memory, in temporal, linguistic, cultural and political terms.

Abstract

The texts compiled in Coptica Palatina were worked on by young scholars taking part in an International Summer School for Coptic Papyrology under the supervision of the editors. The volume offers editions of Coptic literary and magical texts, of private letters, as well as of legal and administrative documents, all complete with a commentary and a modern translation. These texts originate from different regions of Middle and Upper Egypt (Fayyum, Hermupolis, Bawit, Aphrodito, Esna, Apollonopolis magna) and are datable to the 6th/7th up to the 11th/12th centuries CE. The bulk of the material, however, comes from the 7th/8th century, the crucial period of Egypt’s transition from a province of the Byzantine empire to a province of the early Islamic caliphate.

Abstract

For the first time, this comprehensive study deals with the entire reception of Schiller's works in all relevant Slavic literatures up to 1900. She concentrates on the translations of his poetry into the corresponding languages as well as the respective reactions to his work in scientific circles as well as in the wider literary public. Not least of all, it is taken into account to what extent the respective nationalistic journalistic statements on Schiller reflect an independent Slavic opinion formation or, in their dependence on foreign sources, possibly far more particularly reflect German or French judgments on his work. The presentation complements a detailed, more than 1,600 titles comprehensive bibliography of the transmissions of works Schiller in all Slavic languages until 1900.

Abstract

"Madeleine’s diary is unique as she wrote it to record as much as she could about everyday life, people and events so she could use these written traces to rekindle memories later for the family from whom she had been parted. Many diaries of that era focus on the political situation. Madeleine’s diary does reflect and engage with military and political events. It also provides an unprecedented day-by-day account of the struggle to manage material deprivation, physical hardship, mental exhaustion and depression during the Occupation. The diary is also a record of Madeleine’s determination to achieve her ambition to become a university academic at a time when there was little encouragement for women to prioritise education and career over marriage and motherhood. Her diary is edited and translated here for the first time.

Abstract

In the last quarter of the XV. Century was printed in Würzburg the "Expositio Psalmorum", attributed to the Würzburg Bishop Bruno compilation of various commentaries on psalms, biblical odes and other texts ecclesiastical content. One of the first printed editions served as a template for the Russian-Slavonic translation "Tolkovaja Psaltir 'Brunona Gerbipolenskogo", which Dmitrij Gerasimov completed on behalf of the then Novgorod archbishop Makarij in 1535; thanks to the great spread of German prints in Novgorod and the surrounding area, an otherwise quite insignificant psalm commentary was also given special attention in the Eastern Slavs. The aim of this dissertation is to acquaint the "Tolkovaja Psaltir" with the Slavic professional audience, highlighting historical, linguistic and cultural peculiarities that emphasize the importance of this hitherto neglected work, both in terms of the translation problem and in terms of translation on the tradition of lore in the Slavic Orthodox world.

Abstract

The study provides a close analysis of literary works by women in late-18th- and early-19th-century Russia, with a focus on Anna Naumova, Mariia Pospelova, and Mariia Bolotnikova. Political, social and feminist theories are applied to examine restrictions imposed on women. Women authors in particular were fettered by a culture of feminisation strongly influenced by the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. As Sentimentalism and its aesthetics began to give way to Romantic ideals, some provincial Russian women writers saw an opportunity to claim social equality, and to challenge traditional concepts of authorship and a view of women as mute and passive.

Abstract

The relationship between law and diversity was difficult and dialectical throughout the centuries of the legal modernity. Yet to mark its routes it was not a concern for diversity since at the core of its developments there was the issue of individual before the social issue. As a matter of fact, diversity was considered extensively in modern law, but always in an instrumental way. At present this juridical approach shows some limitations, especially in the taking into account the link with the problem of protection of fundamental and human rights. Therefore, it seems appropriate to open a discussion on the issue, assuming diversity, despite its plurality of meanings, as a single topic area from which to start questioning the law. This volume is an attempt in this direction. Taking its cue from these statements and adopting a multidisciplinary perspective, it aims to explore aspects of the complex relationship between law and diversity, assuming as a framework of reference the problem of rights and justice.--------È in un continuo e sofferto rapporto dialettico che diritto e diversità si sono reciprocamente inseguiti lungo i secoli della modernità giuridica.
