Abstract

Development Derailed unravels a fascinating story of how politics undermined promise. The text outlines a proposal put forth in 1962 to develop the lands held by the Canadian Pacific Railway in downtown Calgary. Greeted with excitement and visions of enhanced tax revenues, increased land values, and new investment opportunities the plans ultimately fell prey to conflict between corporate rigidity and an unorganized, ill-informed civic administration and city council. Drawing on the private records of Rod Sykes, the CPR's onsite negotiator and later Calgary's mayor, Max Foran unravels the fascinating story of how politics undermined promise.

Abstract

Cruising the New York City subway, the Transfer Queen is on the prowl! These voyeuristic figure drawings—both poetic and visual—sketch the men of Gotham’s transportation system. A.W. Strouse and Patty Barth spy on strangers with a special kind of anonymous intimacy. Transfer Queen is ideal reading material for kinky commuters. But remember: “A crowded subway car is no excuse for unlawful sexual conduct!”

Abstract

Sustainability represents a key factor in the construction and real estate sector by optimizing economical, ecological and social aspects of buildings. Transportation systems in buildings, as part of the technical building equipment, are not yet fully integrated into this concept. This work analyses the current approach of lift planning and design and develops supportive tools for neglected sections.

Abstract

Automatic fare collection systems (AFC) in public transportation systems extend the options of price discrimination when arranging tariffs. Using a Conjoint analysis the preferences towards the different types of price discrimination are evaluated and the influences on the mode choice are quantified. In addition to this the flat rate bias which describes the tendency to opt for fixed prices is explained and quantified.

Abstract

Abstract

Transports within industrial logistics networks are planned strategically. Due to the existence of uncertainties an operational control of transports is necessary. Thereby, dispatchers are today not supported adequately. A control approach for dynamic, complex and multimodal transports is developed, which intends to support or automate the operational control. The approach has a decentral and heterarchical organization, in which the goods and means of transports are modeled as agents.

Abstract

This book provides a unique overview of the impacts of railways on biodiversity, integrating the existing knowledge on the ecological effects of railways on wildlife, identifying major knowledge gaps and research directions and presenting the emerging field of railway ecology. The book is divided into two major parts: Part one offers a general review of the major conceptual and theoretical principles of railway ecology. The chapters consider the impacts of railways on wildlife populations and concentrate on four major topics: mortality, barrier effects, species invasions and disturbances (ranging from noise to chemical pollution). Part two focuses on a number of case studies from Europe, Asia and North America written by an international group of experts.

Abstract

The use of assessment methodologies is becoming increasingly important in the decision making process under very different environments. There are increasing concerns about making the best possible use of the limited available resources. There is also an increasing will of justifying the decisions in a sound way. This is even more important when considering public spending, public scrutiny and governance accountability. The use of recognized assessment techniques is actually mandatory in many situations, considering environmental, social, economic and sustainability concerns. This book gathers contributions from several authors, advancing the state-of-the-art and presenting examples of applications of assessment methodologies in energy, mobility and other real world applications.

Abstract

A topic of utmost importance in civil engineering is finding optimal solutions throughout the life cycle of buildings and infrastructural objects, including their design, manufacturing, use, and maintenance. Operational research, management science, and optimization methods provide a consistent and applicable groundwork for engineering decision-making. These topics have received the interest of researchers and, after a rigorous peer-review process, eight papers have been published in this Special Issue. The articles in this Printed Edition demonstrate how solutions in civil engineering, which bring economic, social, and environmental benefits, are obtained through a variety of methodologies and tools. Usually, decision-makers need to take into account not just a single criterion, but several different criteria and, therefore, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches have been suggested for application in five of the published papers; the rest of the papers apply other research methods. Most approaches suggested decision models under uncertainty, proposing hybrid MCDM methods in combination with fuzzy or rough set theory, as well as D-numbers. The application areas of the proposed MCDM techniques mainly cover production/manufacturing engineering, logistics and transportation, and construction engineering and management. We hope that a summary of the Special Issue as provided here will encourage a detailed analysis of the papers included in the Printed Edition.
