Abstract

As the considerations in the previous chapter made clear, visual representations
are, without doubt, part of many epistemic processes in contemporary
science. Scientists present diagrams in their publications and talks to communicate
their research results. They investigate computer-generated images
as substitutes for research objects. Drawings in textbooks are used to educate
novices, to introduce them to a new field of knowledge and so on. Moreover,
it was pointed out that in quite a few instances images might also be used
for non-epistemic purposes, for example to gain the attention of a particular
audience

Abstract

Visualizations play an important role in the scientific research process. They serve to illustrate the knowledge gained, but also as a tool to gain knowledge.Such visualizations are also important in linguistics. For example in the form of maps, tree graphs and word nets. In corpus linguistics, explorative visualizations are often a way to make the data accessible and interpretable. The book reflects on the theoretical basics of scientific visualizations in linguistics, shows practical examples and also introduces visualization tools.

Abstract

This work is concerned with regulation and the reconciliation of interests at the interface of energy sector and privacy law. To improve regulatory knowledge within the Smart Grid, an existing procedure of the Federal Network Agency is proposed. By enriching this procedure through aspects of data protection compliant technical engineering and elements of visualisation - drawn from construction and planning law - it is also possible to reduce the complexity of regulatory knowledge generation.

Abstract

Abstract

What is the role of the environment, and of the information it provides, in cognition? More specifically, may there be a role for certain artefacts to play in this context? These are questions that motivate "4E" theories of cognition (as being embodied, embedded, extended, enactive). In his take on that family of views, Hajo Greif first defends and refines a concept of information as primarily natural, environmentally embedded in character, which had been eclipsed by information-processing views of cognition. He continues with an inquiry into the cognitive bearing of some artefacts that are sometimes referred to as 'intelligent environments'. Without necessarily having much to do with Artificial Intelligence, such artefacts may ultimately modify our informational environments. With respect to human cognition, the most notable effect of digital computers is not that they might be able, or become able, to think but that they alter the way we perceive, think and act.
