Abstract

Cardiotoxicity may be caused by radiotherapy and/or anticancer agents for many malignancies, adverse effects of some drugs in the context of medical intervention or heavy metal intake, especially during the anticancer therapy. This book intends to bring forward the recent development in toxicities from cancer treatment. It updates the possible mechanisms of cardiotoxicities of some anticancer agents and the suggested prevention and treatment strategies. This book contains many valuable contributions from the researchers in oncology and cardiology as well as the clinicians who are experts in this field.

Abstract

Using natural products and developing pharmaceutical drugs are emerging topics to reduce blood cholesterol levels for preventing heart disease and stroke. Covering recent progresses in cholesterol-lowering drugs and therapy, this book describes the natural and pharmaceutical products that are in clinical uses to lower cholesterol and lipids and compares these drugs in responses to different diseases such as homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The relationship between ethnicity and cholesterol-lowering drug responses is also reviewed. Each chapter is a building block for the book, but each individual chapter is also a complete subject package for the readers. Researchers from basic and clinic science interested in lipid and cholesterol metabolism, regulation, and lowering will find this book very useful. Features: - Up-to-date information of the molecular mechanisms of cholesterol lowering, the drugs from natural and pharmaceutical products, and their associated therapeutic strategies in human diseases. - Discussion of the pathogenesis of several human diseases, which are associated with high cholesterol levels and evaluation of the results of different cholesterol-lowering drug treatment in these diseases. - Discussion of the combinations of cancer chemotherapy and cholesterol lowering in potential cancer treatment and cancer prevention by cholesterol-lowering drugs. - Critical analysis of the effect of ethnicity on responses to cholesterol-lowering drug therapy leading to rational dose adjustment of cholesterol-lowering drugs for different people use.

Abstract

Congenital Heart Disease is a general term for a range of birth defects that affect the normal workings of the heart. It is one of the most common types of birth defect occurring in 1% of live births and affects up to 9 in every 1,000 babies born in the United Kingdom. It was estimated that 34.3 million people had a congenital heart abnormality in 2013. Abnormalities can arise in 3-5% of off spring in cases of de novo family history. Congenital heart disease was responsible for 223,000 deaths in 2010. This short volume details the common birth defects affecting the structure and functioning of the heart concentrating on the genetic basis and epidemiology, as well as risk factors, diagnostic modalities and treatment options.

Abstract

This volume focuses on the etiology and morphogenesis of congenital heart diseases. It reviews in detail the early development and differentiation of the heart, and later morphologic events of the cardiovascular system, covering a wide range of topics such as gene functions, growth factors, transcription factors and cellular interactions that are implicated in cardiac morphogenesis and congenital heart disease. This book also presents recent advances in stem cell and cell sheet tissue engineering technologies which have the potential to provide novel in vitro disease models and to generate regenerative paradigms for cardiac repair and regeneration. This is the ideal resource for physician scientists and investigators looking for updates on recent investigations on the origins of congenital heart disease and potential future therapies.

Abstract

Advances in the understanding of cardiomyopathies and the growth of cardiology have paralleled one another. Over the years, many classification methods have been developed for cardiomyopathies based on aetiology, structural models and the functional approach. The new concepts and events that have occurred in cardiology generally and in cardiomyopathies specifically are sufficient changes to justify this book. Developments in cardiomyopathies have advanced at a rapid rate, largely because of the progress that has been made in instrumental analysis and the integration of clinical cardiology with other fields of basic research. The material in this book encompasses and blends the knowledge recently acquired in genetics, pathology and physiology with the practical matters of diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract

The world of echocardiography continues to be full of exciting new technological developments with an ultimate goal of better patient care. In this book, titled ""Echocardiography in Heart Failure and Cardiac Electrophysiology"", authors from various parts of the world contributed to the advancement of the field. We have included various chapters about the use of echocardiography and modalities of imaging in various common clinical scenarios - ranging from evaluation of commonly ignored right ventricle, imaging in congestive heart failure, to echocardiographic evaluation of critically ill patients. We have also included topics describing the use of echocardiography in cardiac electrophysiology with special interest to cardiac resynchronization therapy and atrial fibrillation ablation. These topics would be of great interest to the clinicians whether they are trainees, physicians, advanced care providers, or anyone involved in the patient care.

Abstract

The endothelium enables communication between blood and tissues and is actively involved in cardiovascular homeostasis. Endothelial dysfunction has been recognized as an early step in the development of cardiovascular diseases: respectively, endothelium represents a potential therapeutic niche with multiple targets. The purpose of the book is to point out some recent findings of endothelial physiology and pathophysiology emphasizing various aspects of endothelial dysfunction connected to the body's internal and external environment. While basic features of the endothelium are presented in an introductory chapter, the authors of the following 17 chapters have provided extensive insight into some selected topics of endothelial (dys)function. The book would hopefully be useful for anyone interested in recapitulating endothelial (patho)physiology and expanding knowledge of molecular mechanisms involved in endothelial dysfunction, relevant also for further clinical investigations.

Abstract

This is a reference book aimed at cardiologists, electrophysiologists and fellows in training. It presents an expansive review of cardiac electrogram interpretation in a collation of manuscripts that represent clinical studies, relevant anecdotal cases and basic science chapters evaluating cardiac signal processing pertaining to persistent atrial fibrillation. A diagnostic approach to arrhythmias using a standard ECG, the signal average ECG and fetal ECG is highlighted. Intracardiac ICD electrograms are also explored in terms of trouble shooting and device programming.
