OAPEN and DOAB service migration: final stage

Tue 27 Oct 2026
We are glad to announce that our service migration, which we have been working towards over the last several months, is approaching its final stage. This is the transition previously mentioned in our weekly service updates.
Starting on Wednesday 28 October 2026, the following services will be migrated:
- and both the OAPEN Library and DOAB metadata exports.
We aim to complete the migration by Friday 30 October 2026.
The OA Books Toolkit will follow separately next week.
Why are we migrating our services?
OAPEN and DOAB have long relied on external infrastructure and service providers to support the services we provide to our stakeholders. We decided it was time to bring all our services in-house, directly managed by our team. This will not only enable us to save on costs but also give us more control over their maintenance and development.
Additionally, due to the expansion of our team, we now have the technical capabilities to manage our services and the infrastructures ourselves.
Lastly, we want to improve the user experience and services we offer to you, our stakeholders, and by bringing everything in-house, we can better respond to your needs and requirements.
What does this mean for users?
The OAPEN and DOAB repositories themselves are not affected by this migration and will continue to operate as usual.
We have prepared and tested the new environment extensively, so users should not notice any significant difference when using the websites or Dashboard.
Changes to our metadata exports
The service where users and partners may notice some differences are our metadata exports.
While we have made some changes behind the scenes to accommodate the new infrastructure, we have worked to keep the exports themselves as consistent as possible. These changes mainly concern how the exports are generated, stored, and refreshed.
We have spent considerable time testing and validating the exports to ensure a smooth transition. Although some unexpected behaviour may still occur during the migration, the way users and partners access and use our metadata will remain unchanged.
Our goal is to make this transition as seamless as possible, with improvements to the underlying infrastructure rather than changes to how you work with our metadata.
Transition period
We will start migrating our services on Wednesday 28 October 2026 and will provide an update once the transition has been completed. If we encounter any significant issues along the way, we will communicate those as well.
If you notice an error or experience any inconvenience during the transition, please let us know by contacting: oapenhelp@operas.atlassian.net.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we complete this work.
